In March 2020, Marvel Comics debut the proteges that were meant to mentor under the original New Warriors in the Outlawed spinoff miniseries. One of the "new" New Warriors, Snowflake, was confirmed to be a non-binary superhero.

"Snowflake is non-binary and goes by they/them, and has the power to generate individual crystalized snowflake-shaped shurikens," New Warriors writer Daniel Kibblesmith told Marvel.com. "The connotations of the word 'snowflake' in our culture right now are something fragile, and this is a character who is turning it into something sharp."

Snowflake's twin, Safespace, was also meant to be one of the newest New Warriors. "Snowflake is the person who has the more offensive power, and Safespace is the person who has the more defensive power. The idea is that they would mirror each other and complement each other," he added.

The Psychic Twins are fully aware of the online connotations of their codenames. They see being superheroes as “a post-ironic meditation on using violence to combat bullying.”

"Snowflake and Safespace are the twins," the writer said, "and their names are very similar to Screentime; it's this idea that these are terms that get thrown around on the internet that they don't see as derogatory. [They] take those words and kind of wear them as badges of honor."

Speaking of Screentime, his powers involved being connected to the Internet after being exposed to his grandfather's "experimental internet gas."

"The word 'screen time' is only ever used in a sort of restrictive sense, and because we’re doing a story about teenage rebels, a lot of the names are about teens fighting against labels that are put on them. So with Screentime, we liked the idea that he has infinite screen time," Kibblesmith said.

Next up is a vampire character named B-Negative. He's a "living vampire" that may have Morbius to thank for turning him into a supernatural creature. B-Negative was exposed to Morbius' blood during a medical emergency as a child.

"B-Negative is the goth kid. When he was a baby he got a rogue lifesaving blood transfusion, we assume, from Michael Morbius. And now he has a very similar look, and very similar vampire powers," Kibblesmith revealed. "B-Negative ages like a regular person (or does he?) and he definitely drinks blood (or does he?), but designer/artist Luciano Vecchio took brilliant inspiration from the '90s Spider-Man cartoon and gave B-Negative the 'leech suckers' that the animated version of Morbius had on his palms."

Last but certainly not least was Trailblazer, who has a "magic backpack" that opens to a pocket dimension of infinite space. Trailblazer can pull any object or weapon out of the backpack, though she has no control over what may come out.

"She's a group home and foster kid who is volunteering at a senior center when this mysterious threat shows up and Night Thrasher runs to the rescue," he said. "And because she helps him, she ends up in the crosshairs of this new 'Outlawed' law..."

Written by Daniel Kibblesmith and illustrated by Luciano Vecchio, New Warriors #1 was meant to go on sale April 15. The series and its characters' debuts were delayed, however, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
