Yasuhiro Nightow's original science fiction/western manga series was serialized in Tokuma Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Captain from April 1995 to January 1997 and the sequel Trigun Maximum was published in Shōnen Gahosha's Young King OURs from October 1997 until March 2007. The story follows Vash the Stampede, an infamous gunman. While the rumors paint him as a bloodthirsty villain without mercy, Vash is revealed to be a goofball (albeit with a dark past) who endeavors to avoid killing his enemies.

Nightow's story was first adapted into an anime in 1998. Animated by studio Madhouse (The Vampire Dies in No Time), directed by Satoshi Nishimura (Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone) and written by Yōsuke Kuroda (Birdie Wing: Golf Girls' Story), the series ran for a total of 26 episodes, acquiring a large and passionate fan following. Masaya Onosaka (The Princes of Tennis) voiced Vash the Stampede in the original Japanese version of Trigun alongside Hiromi Tsuru (Yu-Gi-Oh! 3D: Bonds Beyond Time) as Meryl Stryfe and Satsuki Yukino (Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon) as Milly Thompson. The English dub features Johnny Yong Bosch (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) as Vash, Dorothy Melendrez (Komi Can't Communication) as Meryl and Lia Sargent (Cowboy Bebop) as Milly.

It appears that a largely new creative team and cast will bring the reboot to life. Orange, the studio behind Godzilla Singular Point and BEASTARS, is producing Trigun Stampede with Kenji Mutou (Hajime no Ippo Rising) serving as director and Kouji Tajima (the live-action Attack on Titan movie) designing the characters. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Food Wars! Shokugeki no Soma) is playing the adult version of Vash the Stampede, while Tomoyo Kurosawa (Dragon Pilot: Hisone and Masotan) is voicing Young Vash.

A trailer for Trigun Stampede premiered back in April, giving fans of the classic anime and new viewers a glimpse of what the reboot has in store. Besides showcasing the new CG animation style, the video highlights a narrative filled with intense action and emotion.

The original Trigun anime is available to stream on Crunchyroll, as is the tie-in film Badlands Rumble. The manga is distributed in English by Dark Horse.
