New Trailer For The Smurfs

Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation have debuted a new theatrical trailer for the CGI/live-action adaptation of The Smurfs that, while playing up the charm of stars Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays, serves to remind us just how annoying the multipurpose function of the word "Smurf" can be. For the record, I counted its use 14 times in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer.

Directed by Raja Gosnell, The Smurfs boasts a voice cast that includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Fred Armisen as Brainy Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette, Anton Yelchin as Clumsy Smurf, John Oliver as Vanity Smurf, Paul Reubens as Jokey Smurf, Alan Cumming as Gutsy Smurf, George Lopez as Grouchy Smurf and Wolfgang Puck as Chef Smurf. It also stars Hank Azaria as the wizard Gargamel, and features appearances by the likes of Sofía Vergara and Tim Gunn. It opens in 3D on Aug. 3

When the wicked wizard Gargamel discovers the location of the Smurf village, our little blue friends scatter in all directions to escape him. Several of them make the mistake of following Clumsy Smurf, and they stumble through a portal into modern-day New York City. Patrick and Grace, a young married couple, befriend the Smurfs and try to protect them from Gargamel's greedy schemes while the pint-sized Blue Man Group searches for a way back home.
