In "Medusa," the next episode of "Supergirl," Cyborg Superman gets his hands on Project Medusa, and the result is deadly. According to a new behind-the-scenes featurette for the episode, Project Medusa is a virus that specifically targets alien DNA and exposure to it results in death.

As seen in the featurette, Cadmus unleashes Project Medusa inside of Alex and Maggie's favorite dive bar. Any alien in the bar was immediately infected and died, but the humans present were left untouched. It's easy to see why Cadmus -- an alien-hating organization spearheaded by Lillian Luthor -- wanted to get its hands on this powerful bioweapon.

"Last week on 'Supergirl,' we learned the reason Cyborg Supergirl needed Superman's DNA was to access the Fortress of Solitude," explains executive producer Ali Adler in the video. "This week, we learn why they needed to gain access to the Fortress of Solitude, because inside is the recipe to the Medusa virus."

It's unclear at this time why the Fortress of Solitude would possess this deadly knowledge or if Project Medusa originated on Krypton to begin with. What's more, we've yet to see how Cadmus was able to not only learn of this deadly virus, but find out where it was being kept. However, Cyborg Superman certainly wouldn't have been able to access the information without Kara, who allowed herself to become powerless in order to save Mon-El's life.

Because of this weapon and its unknown properties, Alex invites her mother Eliza -- played by "Supergirl" alum Helen Slater -- to come take a look and use her astrobiology expertise to examine the crime scene. Naturally, this sets up for Alex to come out to her mother about her recent realization about her identity and her sexuality.

Starring Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, "Supergirl" airs Mondays at 8 pm ET/PT on The CW. The series also stars David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott and features appearances by Calista Flockhart's Cat Grant as well as Tyler Hoechlin's Superman.
