Leaving behind the action blockbusters of the summer, September is ushering in a host of science fiction and fantasy movies based on classic genre premises. From escaping artificial intelligence that has turned murderous in Blank and questing to dangerous cities in search of safety in Vesper to visiting monolithic black shapes floating menacingly in the solar system in Deus: The Dark Sphere, September is bringing movies that are sure to appeal to fans of traditional tropes. September also starts to segue into the spooky season, with sci-fi and fantasy stories mixed with horror and thriller stories that are perfect for the cooling weather and the lengthening nights.

Of course, Hocus Pocus 2 is perhaps the most anticipated Halloween-themed release, but Tiny Cinema leans on horrific premises in its series of collected shorts, while Control shows what happens when a woman wrests power from those who seek to control her. It's not all thrills and chills, however -- September also brings the latest Disney live-action remake with Pinocchio, and Peacock is serving up a genre rom-com with Meet Cute. With so many genre staples at play, this month is sure to bring something for any fan. Here are all of the science-fiction and fantasy movies fans should watch out for in September.

Tiny Cinema Serves up Sci-Fi/Horror Shorts

Tiny Cinema presents six interconnected stories that seem to delve deep into the horror side of science fiction. One story features a zombie at a cozy brunch, while another seems to show a gas station under siege by gun-wielding attackers. There's a mysterious man with writing all over his body and another simple, innocent delivery person who can't seem to complete his job. As the tone of the stories shifts from comedic to macabre, a narrator ties them all together, promising audiences will feel uncomfortable. Whatever Tiny Cinema is, it's sure to be a horrific headrush of a film, an unapologetic thrust into a realm of nightmares.

Tiny Cinema is available On Demand Sept. 6.

Revisit Childhood Animation with Pinocchio

From acclaimed director Robert Zemeckis, the live-action (and CGI) version of the classic Disney movie Pinocchio already has audiences talking. The film tells the story of a puppet brought to life by a wish. As he learns what it's like to be human, he must also contend with a very un-humanlike condition that causes his nose to grow whenever he lies. With an all-star cast featuring Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Keegan-Michael Key, and a beloved storyline, Pinocchio is sure to pull viewers into this latest Disney live-action adaptation.

Pinocchio will premiere on Disney+ on Sept. 8.

Deus: The Dark Sphere Offers Old-School Sci-Fi

Deus: The Dark Sphere promises viewers some good, old-fashioned sci-fi standards. The planet is on its last legs, and it seems as if humanity's hope rests with a spaceship making its way to a mysterious dark sphere that has appeared in orbit around Mars. As the ship approaches, they lose communication with Earth but get a message from the sphere itself: "Deus." Forced to now save themselves before they have any hope of saving humanity, the crew goes up against this unknown, powerful force amid technical malfunctions and epic explosions. Deus: The Dark Sphere offers a plot fairly reminiscent of 2001: A Space Odyssey, though the mysterious object is a sphere instead of a rectangular monolith, and it focuses on Mars rather than a moon of Jupiter, but the similarity to standard sci-fi stock will surely be the movie's draw.

Deus: The Dark Sphere is coming Sept.13 to Digital and DVD.

Craft the Perfect Meet Cute With Time Travel

Meet Cute

Though there's no trailer available yet for Peacock's Meet Cute, the details of the sci-fi rom-com that have been released ensure that audiences will give it a go. Staring media darlings Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson, the movie deconstructs the "meet cute" premise by giving one member of a couple a time machine to repeat that first meeting until it's perfect. When even that isn't enough for Cuoco's character, Sheila, to craft her ideal partner out of Davidson's Gary, she goes further back in time to try to shape Gary into the man she wants him to be. Sometimes sci-fi premises work the best when they're the background to other, more grounded and human stories, and Meet Cute promises to deliver such a blend.

Meet Cute is coming Sept. 21 to Peacock.

Control Gives One Woman the Ultimate Power

The sci-fi thriller Control starts with an almost Saw-like premise. Tied up and locked in a metal room, Eileen is ordered to complete mundane tasks to save her daughter. As the tasks become more difficult and Eileen gets no answers about what is happening to her, she soon finds out that she has powers of her own. Thanks to telekineses, she can now easily complete tasks that once tested her physical limits. Soon Eileen turns the tables on her captors, using her new-found powers to save her family and escape the hellish testing center. Control looks like a thrill ride from start to finish, and sci-fi stories about powerful women will always have a place in the genre.

Catch Control Sept. 23 in limited theatrical release and Sept. 27 on VOD and digital.

Blank Brings Sci-Fi/Horror With Malfunctioning AI

A return to the age-old sci-fi/horror premise of artificial intelligence gone wrong, Blank invites viewers to a new take on the robot apocalypse. A woman joins a writer's retreat where she'll work on a story for a month in isolation, with only her robotic assistant to care for her and help her focus. Someone unleashes malware into the system, however, and the robot assistant soon turns on the writer, locking her in and slowly malfunctioning in creepier and more dangerous ways. The writer joined the retreat to help her find a story when she thought she had none left, but it seems she'll be living one instead. Blank promises classic sci-fi tropes with a clean delivery and a surprise Wayne Brady and will surely delight sci-fi fans eager for more of a horror story.

Blank is in theaters and On Demand Sept. 23.

Embark on a Biotechnological Quest With Vesper

Vesper presents a classic sci-fi fairytale. In a post-apocalyptic world, little remains of the Earth's ecosystem. Power and technology have been centralized in the Citadel, the gleaming city on the horizon open only to a few willing to submit to its control. Vesper has managed to eke out a living on the fringes, honing her own biotechnological skills, until she comes across a woman from the Citadel. Together, they'll journey into the heart of the city to attempt to change the world that has tried to break them. Vesper harkens back to classic quest stories, with its dangerous, all-powerful city and its chosen-one premise. With detailed worldbuilding and a novel focus on biology, Vesper is sure to appeal to genre fans.

Catch Vesper in limited theaters and on VOD on Sept. 30.

The Sanderson Sisters Return in Hocus Pocus 2

The long-awaited sequel to the cult-classic Halloween movie Hocus Pocus is finally arriving at the end of September. Hocus Pocus 2 brings the Sanderson Sisters back while introducing a new generation of naive teens lighting the black flame candle. While Disney has revealed little of the story of Hocus Pocus 2, the movie is sure to garner a large audience based on the love of the original and the sheer charisma of the Sanderson Sisters -- Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy -- alone. As Halloween approaches, Hocus Pocus 2 is a fantastical must-watch to get viewers ready for the spooky season.

Hocus Pocus 2 releases on Sept. 30 on Disney+.
