Hollywood and gamers are still waiting for that one video-game adaptation to become a huge, Iron Man-level hit. Until then, any time one of these movies comes up, it's likely to be compared to the incredibly weird Super Mario Bros., the lackluster Prince of Persia or the successful-but-not-huge horror franchises based on Resident Evil and Silent Hill. But New Regency is hoping Assassin's Creed will be the game changer.

Deadline reports Ubisoft's Motion Pictures division has teamed with the studio for distribution. Prometheus star Michael Fassbender is still attached to star, and has been since earlier this summer.

“We see this as our first big commercial action franchise property," Regency CEO Brad Weston said. "Fassbender just did 12 Years A Slave with us, and he is as good an actor as there is right now. The storyline we are pursuing has a great narrative and because Ubisoft’s games are so character- and story-driven, Assassin’s Creed lends itself perfectly to our goal to re-brand Regency as a filmmaker-driven company.”

“Ubisoft chose to partner with New Regency because they are a talent- and filmmaker-driven company, with the same independent and creative mindset that we have at Ubisoft Motion Pictures,” UMP CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet said. “Bringing aboard New Regency’s renowned production and distribution expertise while maintaining our own creative and financial flexibility ensures that Assassin’s Creed will be a high-quality film that respects the lore and fans of the video game franchise.”

The Assassin's Creed franchise follows the exploits of barkeep Desmond Miles as he discovers he's actually part of a long line of disgraced assassins. Each game finds him heading back through time to various eras where he experiences one of his ancestor's adventures. The next installment of the series, Assassin's Creed III, drops on Oct. 30t and takes place during the American Revolution.
