New Poll Shows Marvel Fans Still Want A Solo Black Widow Movie

"Captain America: Civil War" boasts a hefty supporting cast comprised of a superheroes -- and a lot of them have yet to have a solo outing. To find out which one of those heroes should join the ranks of franchise leads like Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, USA Today had Fandango poll over 1,000 moviegoers that have bought tickets for "Captain America: Civil War."

The results came out overwhelmingly in favor of Black Widow, with 48% of those polled saying that they want to see a movie starring her. Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow debuted way back in the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, in 2010's "Iron Man 2." She has since appeared in 2012's "The Avengers," 2014's "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron." "Civil War" will mark her fifth appearance in a supporting role.

As for the rest of the poll, The Vision (15%) came in at a distant second, with Falcon (12%), Hawkeye (10%), War Machine (8%) and Scarlet Witch (7%) rounding out the list.

Those polled also weighed in on which Marvel hero they thought has had the best solo franchise so far -- and, appropriately for "Civil War," it turned out to be a competition between Captain America (who won with 57%) and Iron Man (43%).

Fandango managing editor Erik Davis reasoned that Cap won because of his status as a man out of time. "Here's this guy who's a man out of time, and he has to find a way to belong in a world where he doesn't belong," Davis said. "People like that outsider aspect and it helps them invest in him more."

He also added that, after appearing in a number of films as a supporting character, fans "know that [Black Widow's] backstory is very interesting and they want to see her front and center." Davis added, "people love watching Scarlett Johansson kick [butt], especially as this character."

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo and starring Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chadwick Boseman, Anthony Mackie, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle and more, "Captain America: Civil War" opens on May 6.
