The New Mutants has certainly had a hard time making it to the theater, experiencing several delays since it began filming in 2017. However, screenwriter Knate Lee appears to believe the delays have benefited the film in some key ways
"In a weird way, I think the delay's been good for us," Lee shared in a recent interview with Empire Magazine. "Last year, I saw the most epic, grand-scale superhero movie ever [Avengers: Endgame]. You can't go bigger than that. "So, it feels like the perfect time for a superhero movie that's more intimate and claustrophobic. And we still have so many 'firsts': we're the first Marvel horror, we're the first to feature a gay relationship. Even though we're late… we still beat everybody."
Lee's comments were made before The New Mutants experienced its latest delay due to the recent coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The film was originally planned to release on April 3, though it has since been delayed indefinitely. Other film premieres experiencing similar delays due to the coronavirus outbreak include Black Widow and No Time to Die.Â
It was once thought that The New Mutants was previously delayed due to reshoots being necessary, though director Josh Boone recently debunked those rumors. One of the biggest reasons for the film's delay was the Disney-Fox merger.
Directed and co-written by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The film was originally scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 3.
