WARNING: The following contains spoilers for New Mutants #16 by Vita Ayala, Rod Reis & VC's Travis Lanham.

Wolfsbane's attempts to resurrect her son, Tier, have been stymied. The half-Asgardian mutant didn't leave a body when he died. That disrupts a key part of the Five's resurrection process, since they can't verify that he isn't alive somewhere. Looking for more information, Wolfsbane goes to Krakoa's mutant investigators, X-Factor. She gets a classic case of good news/bad news from Eye Boy and Prodigy, continuing her tortured history with her son.

In New Mutants #16, Eye-Boy and Prodigy tell Wolfsbane that her long-thought dead son Tier could still be alive, but that's not necessarily a good thing.

New Mutants Wolfsbane Tier Alive

Tier's father was the Asgardian Wolf Prince Hrimhari. Wolfsbane bonded with him during "The Asgardian Wars," when the New Mutants were accidentally drawn into Loki's feud with the X-Men. They would meet again during Wolfsbane's time in Wolverine's black ops X-Force unit, when Tier was conceived.

The magical properties of Wolfsbane's pregnancy threatened her life. Hrimhari traded his soul to Hela in exchange for the life of mutant healer Elixir's. Elixir, whom Wolfsbane had a problematic relationship with when he was a student at Xavier's School, healed Wolfsbane enough that she would survive Tier's impending birth.

Unfortunately for Wolfsbane, Tier's birth led to further complications. As the first child born of a mutant and a god, he attracted the attention of gods and demons from multiple pantheons. They wanted possession of Tier to tip the balance of power in an inevitable war of the gods. One god in particular, Hela's half-brother Agamemnon, looked to take Tier for himself by kidnapping Wolfsbane and delivering her child himself.

Agamemnon, the newborn, who had been coughed up by his mother like a hairball, savagely lashed out at the first thing he saw. Tier's apparent murder of Agamemnon caused Wolfsbane to reject him. Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night, adopted Tier and raised him as his own.

Wolfsbane felt immense guilt over abandoning her son. She would eventually leave X-Factor Investigations and reunite with Tier. Their time together would be short, as they would be drawn into the Hell On Earth War, a battle between six Hell Lords, which could only end in Tier's death. At the war's climax, Wolfsbane's former X-Factor teammate Strong Guy murdered Tier to become the (short-lived) King of Hell. He used his newfound power to resurrect Monet St. Croix.

Wolfsbane hoped that Krakoa's resurrection protocols would reunite her with Tier. The good news she receives from X-Factor is that her son appears to be alive. His Cerebro back-up was last updated three days before Wolfsbane came looking for answers. Corruption similar to what happened during "X of Swords" and Tier's status as a demi-god might be affecting Cerebro, but it looks like he's alive.

Unfortunately for Wolfsbane, that means that X-Factor can't assist her any further. Prodigy and Eye Boy attempt to make her feel better by pointing out that he might be happy where he's currently living. They think they've given her hope. Instead, they've brought all of her guilt over abandoning Tier rushing back. She rushes out of the Arbor Magna in tears. Prodigy comments that Wolfsbane's imagination about her son's fate is "more monstrous than the truth."

Wolfsbane is barely holding herself together when she goes looking for Dani Moonstar. Unfortunately, she's on a mission with Karma in Otherworld. Without Dani's support, Wolfsbane breaks down. She promised to be with Wolfsbane every step of the way in her search for Tier. Unfortunately, she won't be able to keep that promise. She and Karma are being detained in an Otherworld dungeon as the issue ends.

Motherhood was rarely anything but a source of trauma for Wolfsbane, a character that had already been through more than her fair share. Having her chance at a reunion with Tier on Krakoa ripped away from has taken her to the breaking point. She's always been resilient in the past. Whether she can now depends on whether anyone can help her reunite with Tier.
