Disney's acquisition of Fox as well as their displeasure with Dark Phoenix and the New Mutants script stalled the film's initial release. This lead to reshoots of the film.

Charlie Heaton, who plays Sam Guthrie/Cannonball in the film also spoke about the film recently. While appearing at the For the Love of Sci-Fi convention in Manchester, England, Heaton told fans the film was coming.

"No, it’s coming out next year, but we filmed it almost two years ago. It’s the release [date] that’s been moved quite a while," Heaton said. "If you don’t know, The New Mutants is like an X-Men spinoff. It was a comic book; Bill Sienkiewicz did it and it was an X-Men comic. It’s basically like a separate bunch of mutants. We shot this a while back and it's been pushed because Fox has now merged with Disney."

The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (Atlantis) as Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Cannonball, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Dani Moonstar and Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Sunspot. The film arrives April 3, 2020.
