The New Mutants finally premiered in theaters this weekend and grossed $7 million.

According to Variety, this puts New Mutants at the top of the domestic box office. However, New Mutants came in at the low end of pre-weekend expectations, projecting it would open to a figure between $7 and $10 million. It also had the lowest opening weekend for an X-Men film. The previous lowest debut for the franchise was the $33 million bow of Dark Phoenix followed by the $53 million debut of The Wolverine.

However, prior X-Men movies did not have to deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The ongoing health crisis meant New Mutants opened in significantly fewer theaters than its predecessors. The film only played in 2,412 locations over the weekend compared to the 3,025 theater count X-Men had when it debuted in July 2000.

"We’re encouraged by the results," Disney’s president of global distribution Cathleen Taff said on The New Mutants opening. "We didn’t expect everyone to come back to the movies at once, but there’s clearly an appetite."

Also premiering in theaters this weekend was Bill & Ted Face the Music, which grossed $1.06 million from 1,007 locations. Additionally, The Personal History of David Copperfield opened to $520,000 from 1,360 theaters while Unhinged expanded into 2,331 locations to gross another $2.6 million for an $8.8 million domestic cumulative.

Directed and co-written by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The film is now playing in theaters.
