After several delays, The New Mutants has finally premiered in theaters and is now on track for a solid opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The New Mutants grossed $3.1 million on its opening day. $750,000 of that gross came from its Thursday night screenings. This puts the film on track for an $8+ million opening weekend, which would handily put it on top of the domestic box office. It would also mark the biggest domestic opening for a theatrical release since the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis began.

A projected $8 million bow for New Mutants would give it the lowest opening weekend for an X-Men movie. However,  the impact of the ongoing pandemic makes it difficult to compare New Mutants with the box office performances of past X-Men movies. For example, past entries in this franchise could open in over 4,000 locations. New Mutants, on the other hand, could only play in 2,412 theaters thanks to theaters still being closed in states like California and New York.

Also opening in wide release on Friday was The Personal History of David Copperfield and Bill & Ted Save the Music. The former film took in just $171,000 on opening day from 1,360 theaters while the latter title debuted with $400,000 from 1,007 theaters.

Directed and co-written by Josh Boone, The New Mutants stars Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. The film is now playing in theaters.
