Josh Boone recently spoke on 2019's Dark Phoenix, saying the film's bad reception takes some of the pressure off of his upcoming movie, The New Mutants

"Look, you can only go up after Dark Phoenix," the director shared with Empire. "That's not to say anything bad about the people involved, but it was what it was." Boone added, "Honestly, I feel less pressure now than I did ahead of [the first slated release date]. Because we've tested our movie so many times, and audiences have loved it."

Originally released in the United States on June 7, 2019, 20th Century Fox's Dark Phoenix grossed lower than any other movie in the X-Men film franchise. Written and directed by Simon Kinberg and starring Sophie Turner, Dark Phoenix also received some of the worst reviews of any X-Men film, with a current critic rating of 23% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The New Mutants has had a hard time making it to the theater, as the film was originally planned to release in 2018 before it was hit with several delays, mostly due to the Fox/Disney merger. Now, the movie has been delayed once again due to the current coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, which has caused the delay of several film premieres. A new release date for The New Mutants hasn't been announced.
