Dawn of X: New Mutants Head to Space for Some Intergalactic Gambling

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for New Mutants #1 by Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brisson and Rod Reis, on sale Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Marvel Comics' X-Men relaunch is in full swing. So far the publisher has debuted the first issues of X-Men, Marauders and Excalibur. Next week fans of Marvel's Merry Mutants get a two-for-one treat with the release of New Mutants #1 and X-Force #1.

We'll deal with X-Force #1 at a later point, but now we have the classic New Mutants team (Sunspot, Wolfsbane, Mirage, Karma, Magik, and Cypher) back together again in the Dawn of X era. Joining them are two members of Generation X -- Mondo and Chamber -- as the gang sets out on a special mission. Instead of kicking their feet up on the mutant island nation of Krakoa with the rest of the X-Men, the New Mutants are heading to the stars.

Their tour guide of space are the Starjammers, led by Cyclops and Havok's father, Corsair. Fans got a chance to see the Starjammers in X-Men #1, as they joined the mutants for a cookout in the Blue Area of the Moon. This is where Cyclops established the Summers House, which serves as a departure point for Krakoa's first response/first-strike capabilities via its Krakoa gateway. A preview of New Mutants #1 takes the reader inside the Starjammers' ship, where a friendly sparring match is taking place between Magik and Raza, with both teams cheering on their respective members.

Sunspot naturally decides to back Magic, with Corsair confident in Raza's ability to win. The winner gets a bottle of Kentucky bourbon, even if it's hard to find in space. "I've seen Raza best ten men with nothing more than morning breath and an old spoon," Corsair says. "Morning breath is the worst," Sunspot replies. Raza does get the upper hand when he smacks the base of his sword into Magik's nose, sending her into a rage. She uses her Soulsword to break Raza's sword while also slicing off his robotic arm, bringing the match to an end.

So it would seem that Sunspot just won his bet with Corsair, meaning he can expect some Kentucky bourbon in his near future. The last page of the preview shows the group heading to a space station called Benevolence, on the edge of Shi'ar space. Even though Corsair says they're only making a pit stop, he warns Sunspot that the Starjammers have a bit of a reputation there. Corsair also describes Benevolence as "the ass end of a space empire," which we'll leave to your imagination.

If you've been paying to the solicitations for New Mutants, then you're aware that they are joining the Starjammers to search for their teammate, Cannonball, so they can show him all the wonders that Krakoa has to offer. However, they are almost guaranteed to run into roadblocks from the Shi'ar. We'll see how successful the first leg of their cosmic journey goes when New Mutants #1 goes on sale November 6.
