Originally slated for release in April 2018, Fox's long-delayed Marvel film The New Mutants may still be on track for a theatrical release. While appearing at the For the Love of Sci-Fi convention in Manchester, England, star Charlie Heaton assured fans the film would finally be released in 2020, attributing the delays to Disney's acquisition of Fox, which finalized earlier this year.

"No, it’s coming out next year, but we filmed it almost two years ago. It’s the release [date] that’s been moved quite a while," he explained. "If you don’t know, The New Mutants is like an X-Men spinoff. It was a comic book; Bill Sienkiewicz did it and it was an X-Men comic. It’s basically like a separate bunch of mutants. We shot this a while back and it's been pushed because Fox has now merged with Disney."

Principal photography on The New Mutants wrapped in 2017, with additional reshoots planned to rework its ending. According to producer Simon Kinberg, the difficulty completing reshoots revolved around working with the main cast's busy schedules. It's currently unclear if the planned reshoots have been completed, though a new edit of the film was reportedly received well by test audiences in August.
