USA Today has posted two new photos of Michael Rooker as Yondu in "Guardians of the Galaxy" with comments from the actor as well as director James Gunn. While it's certainly not the absolute first time fans will have seen Yondu in full -- he appeared recently in the extended "Guardians of the Galaxy" preview footage -- it's certainly the most detailed look released yet.

Yondu fills the role of father figure for a young Peter Quill, years before he becomes the legendary outlaw Star-Lord.

"He's feeling lost, vulnerable, defeated, emotionally drained and hurt, and here is Yondu in this light coming down and brings him up into the spacecraft and takes him away," Rooker told USA Today. "It might have been pretty horrific, but also a bit cool."

Unsurprisingly, Yondu isn't really a solely good or solely bad character -- as Rooker puts it, the character has "some interesting issues," but "there's hope and there's a heart inside Yondu."

"It's not so black and white -- I should say blue and white," said Rooker. "And I enjoy roles that are like that, even if they're not in some galaxy somewhere other than ours."
