Comic book writer Tom King has revealed whether he thinks his canceled New Gods script he co-wrote with Ava DuVernay could be revived now that there is new leadership at DC Studios.

"Ah, I mean, anything's possible," he said in an exclusive interview with CBR. "I love that script. I loved working with Ava. It was an absolute joy. She's a genius storyteller. You absolutely never know. I don't want to close any doors. Right now, I'm just so incredibly busy. I have so much on my plate. It'd be hard to see taking on a whole movie right now. But that script has never been read. The movie was taken off the docket because it conflicted with the plans they had at the time. So who knows? When new plans come, maybe new opportunities will arise. That's complete speculation. I have absolutely no knowledge. I'd love to work with Ava again. She was a joy."

New Gods was announced in March 2018, with King signing on to co-write the film's script in May 2019. While details surrounding New Gods' plot remain scarce, DuVernay had previously confirmed that the film would focus on the superhuman escape artist Mister Miracle and his wife Big Barda, as well as other characters from the Fourth World mythology like Darkseid All-Widow and the Bugs. Created by comic book legend Jack Kirby in 1971, the New Gods are a fictional extraterrestrial race hailing from the twin planets of New Genesis and Apokolips.

The SnyderCut Doomed New Gods

New Gods, along with Aquaman spinoff The Trench, was canceled in April 2021, with Warner Bros. and DC stating that evolving plans for the DC Universe were the reason the legacy projects would no longer be moving forward. However, DuVernay later stated that Darkseid's inclusion in New Gods ultimately led to the film's cancellation. "The studio decided that they did not want to pursue a certain part of that comic world based on some things that were going on with another film in that world," the director said in October 2021, suggesting that Warner Bros. did not want the tyrannical ruler to appear in both Zack Snyder's Justice League and New Gods.

Warner Bros. Discovery recently appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-chairs and co-CEOs of DC Studios, a new company that oversees all film, television and animation projects set in the DCU. Gunn will oversee the creative aspect of DC Studios, while Safran’s role will center around business and production. The duo is currently finalizing a ten-year-plan for Warner Bros. and the DCU that will "tell one great overarching story... across film, television gaming, live-action, and animation." Gunn has also asked the fans which DC characters they want to see on the big screen, which means that King and DuVernay's New Gods film could be willed into existence so long as the fans want it.

The next DC film to open in theaters will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods on March 17, 2023.
