There were some pretty interesting comics canceled in 2018 and the biggest casualties came when Marvel canceled a number of their Marvel Legacy books and DC Comics wiped out a ton of their New Age of Heroes comics. However, while 2018 saw many comics hit the chopping block, that opened the door for 2019 to see some fresh blood hit the spinner racks.
There are a ton of new books coming that sound great, from new major event comics to revivals of older books that fans have been missing. There are also some non-superhero comics as well as one interesting alternate world storyline (very similar to one of Marvel's most popular alternative characters). With some great titles coming soon, here is a look at 10 new comics to read in 2019.
10. THE SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN
Marvel Comics is bringing in a second title for the popular Conan the Barbarian in 2019. The title is Savage Sword of Conan and the creative team behind the book includes Gerry Duggan (Deadpool) and Ron Garney (Uncanny X-Force).
This new comic to read in 2019 tells the story of Conan as he travels across the high seas. The promotional material indicates that it will include fighting, romance, and treasure. Also hitting this year will be a series of Marvel-produced serialized novellas that pay homage to Conan's pulp fiction history. The first issue of Savage Sword of Conan is set to hit stands in February 2019.
9. AGE OF X-MAN
There is a major X-Men event coming out in 2019 as well. Titled Age of X-Man, this will start off with 10 issues in Uncanny X-Men before it then spins off into six Age of X-Man books that runs for five issues each. That means that X-Men fans will get 40 issues of a new epic X-Men story in 2019.
With the book titled Age of X-Man, it seems likely that the main character here will be Nate Grey. It also seems like this will once again dip its toes into the Age of Apocalypse world that Gray came from. That means that this new comic to read in 2019 could provide some mind-twisting adventures for the long-time X-Men faithful.
8. OLD MAN QUILL
One of the most popular alternate universe heroes to come along in a long time was Old Man Logan. That world also presented an Old Man Hawkeye as well and now Marvel is headed even further into the future with a new comic to read in 2019 called Old Man Quill.
This one seems weird from the start because Peter Quill never seemed like someone who would ever really grow up. Writer Ethan Sacks (Old Man Hawkeye) and artist Robert Gill (Iceman) are creating the series and Sacks said that this is a look at what the Guardians of the Galaxy were up to during the time of Old Man Logan. Old Man Quill will hit in February 2019.
7. DIAL H FOR HERO
Dial H for Hero is a comic book idea that traces its history back to 1968 when it first appeared in House of Mystery, and then got its own run in the '80s in Adventure Comics. It returned in 2003 and 2012 and now it is one of the new comics to read in 2019.
The great news is that this is coming from the mind of Brian Michael Bendis (Alias) and artist Joe Quinones (America). It features a young Hispanic boy named Miguel as the boy who dials H, while Superman himself is shown on the concept illustrations for the new series. Dial H for Hero hits stands in March 2019.
6. SPIDER-MAN: LIFE STORY
Spider-Man: Life Story will be a very interesting new comic to read in 2019. This is a unique look at the life of Spider-Man by Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals) and Mark Bagley (All-New X-Men). Not only that, but this is a look at his entire life -- including his elder years in the future.
Zdarsky recently worked on Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man and said that he had an idea of a story that would span decades. He said it will show how time changes the characters in Marvel Comics if they were allowed to age in real time. The series goes on sale in March 2019 and begins with Spider-Man starting out in the '60s.
5. SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH
Sabrina the Teenage Witch received a new lease on life thanks to her Netflix original series -- which itself was a slight spinoff of The CW series Riverdale. Both of these television series were adapted from the Archie comic book line and both put a fresh spin on the popular characters.
The success of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has resulted in interest for a new comic hitting in 2019. While the television show was darkly humorous, the new comic book based on the character will be much lighter in tone. Kelly Thompson (Jem and the Holograms) will team with Veronica and Andy Fish (Archie) on the new Archie Comics series which goes on sale in March 2019.
4. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Old Man Quill isn't the only place that fans can read about the Guardians of the Galaxy this year. Another new comic to read in 2019 is the relaunched Guardians of the Galaxy title. However, for fans who have enjoyed the exploits of the movie version of the intergalactic team, this will be a very different looking Guardians unit.
According to the solicitation, the new Guardians of the Galaxy comic will feature new members that join after Thanos arrives. This team is said to be more violent and extreme than the versions most fans are used to. Donny Cates (Thanos) and Geoff Shaw (Marvel Knights) will bring the new book to fans in March 2019.
3. YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS
The DC streaming service started off their original presentations with the live-action Titans but then they gave fans what they really wanted with a brand-new season of Young Justice. In conjunction with that new television series that just premiered, there is a new comic to read in 2019 based on the characters.
Young Justice: Outsiders hit shelves in January 2019 and looks to be exactly what the fans who have been begging for a revival have been waiting for. This might not be something to dive into with no experience with the original series, but for those who love the characters and world, this is a great comic book debut for 2019.
2. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
There is a rumored reboot coming to television of Buffy the Vampire Slayer -- something that long-time fans might not be happy about. However, for those who don't mind something new coming along and making slight changes to the beloved property, BOOM! Studios are doing the same thing with the comics.
A new comic to read in 2019 will see a modern-day update of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her first adventures as a slayer. The good news is that Joss Whedon is there to work as a consultant while Jordie Bellaire and Dan Mora will be the creative team behind the new take. The first issue went on sale on January 9.
For fans who just want to read some fun superhero stories this year, possibly the perfect new comic to read in 2019 is the Champions relaunch. The team of teenage superheroes will have the creative team of Jim Zub and Steve Cummings, who created the Image title Wayward.
The team will likely still feature Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Viv Vision, Nadia Pym, Ironheart, Sam Alexander and Braun, and is going to add Patriot, Red Locust and Power Man. There also looks to be a mutant joining the team down the line known as Pinpoint. The rebooted Champions title goes on sale in January 2019.
