A new Cloverfield movie is in the works at Paramount Pictures.

According to Deadline, Babak Anvari (Under the Shadow, Wounds) is set to direct a new Cloverfield movie, with Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project) writing. J.J. Abrams, Hannah Minghella and Jon Cohen will be producing the film, with Matt Reeves, Drew Goddard and Bryan Burk executive producing. No details were provided about the plot and how the new film might link to the larger Cloverfield universe.

What Is Cloverfield?

The original Cloverfield released in 2008 and was directed by Reeves from a script by Goddard, with Abrams producing. Commercially, the film was a huge success and brought in over $170 million against a budget of around $25 million. Critically, the movie holds a 78 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that it's "Certified Fresh" on that platform.

The second installment in the franchise was 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg from a script by Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, the plot sees a young woman, Michelle, waking up in an underground bunker as a captive of a man, Howard Stambler, who insists that the Earth has been rendered uninhabitable. In the end, Michelle escapes and sees the world has actually been invaded by the aliens from Cloverfield. Commercially, the film performed well and brought in more than $110 million against a budget of less than $15 million. 10 Cloverfield Lane remains the highest-rated installment in the franchise and holds a 90 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The third and most recent film in the series is 2018's The Cloverfield Paradox, which was directed by Julius Onah from a script by Oren Uziel. Set on a space station, the movie follows a group of scientists attempting to solve an energy crisis on Earth when the planet inexplicably vanishes. The movie was released directly onto Netflix after the first trailer dropped during Super Bowl LII, meaning no box office information is available. Critically, the film was the lowest-rated of the three by a wide margin and only holds a 22 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

No release date, title or casting information was provided for the new Cloverfield movie.
