Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures have premiered what's likely the final theatrical trailer for "Captain America: The First Avenger," director Joe Johnston's highly anticipated comic-book adaptation.

Clocking in at two minutes and 30 seconds, the new trailer balances humor and action while clearly laying out the origin of Captain America and the threat he's facing -- namely, the Nazis' deep-science division HYDRA, led by Johann Schmidt (AKA the Red Skull). There are plenty of explosions, and even a little shield-throwing, tossed in for good measure.

Set during World War II, the early days of the Marvel Universe, the film follows Chris Evans as the frail Steve Rogers as he volunteers to participate in an experimental program that transforms him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America. As the costumed Sentinel of Liberty, Rogers joins Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) to wage war on the villainous Red Skull (Hugo Weaving) and the forces of HYDRA.

"Captain America: The First Avenger," which opens in 2D and 3D on July 22, also stars Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci, Richard Armitage, Natalie Dormer, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough and Samuel L. Jackson.
