The Hellmouth crossover has pushed the modern version of Buffy and her allies to their extremes, forcing them to assemble a team of allies from across Sunnydale. Although the day is saved, sacrifices are made and partnerships are potentially destroyed forever.

The ending of the Hellmouth crossover significantly changes things for the protectors of Sunnydale, hinting at a more expansive and mysterious Buffyverse than anyone could have ever expected.

FALL OF THE HELLMOTHER

The Hellmother has been revealed to be the source of all the evil that's been seeping into Sunnydale through the Hellmouth. Her plan was to possess Angel and, upon draining Buffy of her blood, she would be able to cross over into the mortal world. Buffy refused to go down quietly, and put up a good fight against the possessed Angel. However, Buffy was soon outnumbered by the Hellmother's demons. Drusilla tried to strike back at the Hellmother, who betrayed her, but she's flung into the mysterious lake in a cave that an alternate future version of Buffy had vanished into. Buffy is saved at the last moment by the assembled Scoobies -- Kendra, Anya, Cordelia, Willow and Rose, riding atop the massive bat creature Camazotz.

Their presence turns the tide of the battle. Willow is eventually even able to draw the Hellmother out of Angel, giving Buffy the chance to tackle her towards the mysterious lake. Camazotz saves Buffy, leaving the Hellmother to fall into the lake. There, she's dragged into the depths by Drusilla and the alternate Buffy to a place none have ever returned to talk about. This seems to imply that the Hellmother is gone once and for all, along with Drusilla and the alternate future Buffy. The day has been saved but at a major cost.

THE END OF THE SCOOBIES

The conflict has seen the Scoobies splintered further than they've ever been before. Before the Scoobies could make their way into the Hellmouth after Buffy, Xander was forced to let his soul bond to Willow fade away. This destroyed the last of his humanity and seemingly killed him in the process. Buffy, Giles and Willow were all shaken by the incident. Giles blamed himself for not being able to prevent the Hellmouth from opening in the first place, and Buffy felt responsible for failing to protect her friend. Buffy's attempts to keep the group together failed too, as Willow revealed she'd accepted a chance to study abroad. She'll be gone for a handful of months at least, and although she still loves Buffy, she can't be by her side yet. Willow departs, leaving a grieving Buffy behind.

Buffy isn't the only person left to protect Sunnydale though. Robin has been missing since he (along with the rest of the men in town) were corrupted into becoming soldiers for the Hellmouth, but he could still offer his assistance once he's back to normal. Cordelia takes part in the battle and seems to come to terms with things like demons being real. Coupled with her stated interest to move to Los Angeles after graduation, her path to joining the cast of Angel is further set up. Kendra has also survived, meaning there's a living second Slayer around. Working with Buffy, the pair could become a decidedly dangerous duo. It'll be interesting to see how the two characters interact going forward, as the TV version of Kendra died before she could ever receive much character development.

POWER OF THE PREVIOUS

Anya is revealed to have a much deeper role in this version of the Buffyverse than she did in the original TV timeline. She's collected magical wares and items for centuries. She's also been a long-established ally to a number of major characters including Angel, Drusilla and Spike. It's also suggested that she was an operative with the Watchers at one point in her extended life. She's even hinted to have previously sold her services to both the Powers That Be and the demonic Wolfram & Hart. When Giles approaches her about helping him do more to prevent Hellmouths from opening up again, she makes a number of revelations to him about how the world actually works.

Anya shares that over the centuries, she's been building essentially an almanac of demonic entry points across dimensions. These maps could enable Giles and Anya to prevent future demonic incursions before they happen. Some of the maps are of other dimensions, hinting at the possibility of adventures across the cosmos into Hell dimensions like Lorne's native Pylea. But this isn't actually the biggest revelation. With Giles overwhelmed by the scope of their new mission, one person Anya seems to suggest will be crucial going forward is the Slayer who came before Buffy. When Giles argues that she's long dead, Anya implies she's actually alive -- and will soon come to Giles. There hasn't ever been much information disclosed about the Slayer who came before Buffy, so this could be a major addition to what's known about the history of the Slayers.

SLAYER-VERSE

The confirmation of other dimensions suggests that the scope of the Buffyverse might be far greater than anyone expected. One such dimension is seemingly showcased in the final moments of Hellmouth #5. In a different Sunnydale than the one we know, a woman who looks like Buffy runs a small bar. Her one patron is a man who appears to be Xander. The two have apparently been friends since childhood, suggesting that this version of Buffy actually grew up in Sunnydale instead of moving there when she was older. This Xander even seems to work at the hospital, as he offers to try and get Buffy a job there. When the pair are attacked by a vampire, they're saved by what appears to be a version of Willow. In this world, she's become the Slayer instead of Buffy.

If this is indeed another dimension, then it suggests other versions of the Slayer exist across the multiverse. This could even allow these new versions of the characters to meet the original incarnation of the Buffyverse cast from the TV series. This also sets up the potential for a number of possible new Slayers across the multiverse and might be the most exciting development to come from the new comic.
