WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Curon, now available on Netflix.

Netflix's Curon concludes on a very shocking note because as much as it seems like the titular rural town has been saved, there are more shadow doubles rising up from its haunted lake. These beings plan on replacing inhabitants and carrying out their deepest, darkest fantasies, but in Season 1 we do learn a few other key insights.

It's discovered that these doppelgängers are connected to an Italian-German rivalry in the town that traces back to World War II and the Raina family has a lot do with it after trying to drown the Nazi descendants years ago by breaking down a dam. However, there are some pretty big mysteries that we never get answers to.

WHY IS KLARA'S DOUBLE HEROIC?

Klara's (Anna Ferzetti) first double is killed when the double of her husband, Albert (Alessandro Tedeschi), slits its throat. He doesn't want Klara 2.0 replacing his wife, even though he rose up from the lake as a teen as well and should be glad to see his kind joining him. That said, this act clearly shows the lake that a Klara double has no purpose here on land, yet another one shows up.

Only this time, the real Klara kills herself and lets the double take her life and family over. However, fans are wondering what her real deal is because Klara 3.0 actually helps the Raina family take out the other doppelgängers wreaking havoc. She helps saves Klara's kids, as well as the Raina teens, by working with Thomas Raina (Luca Lionello), so we'd like to know why she's pretending to be a hero and not a villain. If anything, her rejection by Albert and Klara should have made her bitter and hateful towards real humans.

WHO IS THE SHADY PRIEST?

Klara's daughter, Micki (Juju Di Domenico), is betrayed by her best friend, Lukas (Luca Castellano), who's angry she loves Daria Raina (Margherita Morchio) instead of him. He outs Micki and when his hatred builds, he's killed and replaced by a shadow double. However, when his dad brings a priest home to exorcise Lukas 2.0, the priest has a weird relationship with the boy.

It's implied the priest might be a pedophile, but also, that he knows about the doubles and actually covers for them. He jokes with the dad nothing is wrong, knowing full well this is a demon in human skin. When Lukas 2.0 is killed in the finale and the original's body is dug up, it gets weirder as this mysterious priest consoles the father with a sinister look in his face. Fans are even wondering if he might be connected to the German occultists who keep the lake steeped in malevolence.

WHAT'S THE RULES WITH DOUBLES?

It's implied once the original person is killed, clones cannot come to life so in Klara's case, once Klara 3.0 dies, that's it for her. However, it's vague as to what really governs them when they come to land. The other doubles are pure evil, as seen with Daria's mom, Anna, as well as Albert and Lukas, but we don't know if some can rebuke their ways. Klara 3.0's acting as a virtuous person but she could be playing a darker game.

Fans are also curious how many chances a double has to come to life. Klara got two shots so many would like to know what might make a double give up once it's killed. Micki and Daria's doubles are seen at the end trapped beneath a frozen lake so would they keep dying and coming back, until they crack the ice? The series leaves these rules so obscure, not to mention Klara had kids with an Albert double, so we have no clue how this affects their bodies and minds.

WHO ARE THE OTHER DOUBLES?

Thomas' friend, Berger, helps him rescue the kids from Lukas, but he dies in the process. The fact he knows so much about the doubles and is so cool has fans thinking Berger might have been a double who redeemed himself too. What's intriguing is we have no clue who else in the town might have been swapped out. Seeing as Thomas was so caring towards Anna's double, apart from her being his daughter, many think he could have been one too who couldn't kill his own kind.

There's no real marker apart from behavior and we now see not all operate like maniacs, blowing the show wide open. The Germans performed dark arts to replace the Italians out of revenge so most of Curon could be replaced already. However, seeing as Klara is part-German, there's a chance Ober and the Nazi descendants may be doubles too. It's a guessing game we have no answer for because the doubles cover their tracks so well.

Directed by Fabio Mollo and Lyda Patitucci, Curon stars Valeria Bilello, Luca Lionello, Federico Russo and Margherita Morchio. Season 1 is now streaming on Netflix.
