Netflix and Legendary Television, the TV branch of movie studio Legendary Pictures, have announced that Hayley Atwell has been cast as the voice of the spelunking adventurer Lara Croft in their upcoming anime adaptation of Tomb Raider. Story details about the new Tomb Raider series are scant, but the official synopsis reveals that it will continue the continuity last seen in the 2018 video game Shadow of the Tomb Raider:

Lara Croft, one of the video game world’s most iconic adventurers, makes her anime debut in an all new series. Picking up after the events of the highly successful Tomb Raider video-game reboot trilogy, the animated series will chart the globetrotting heroine’s latest, greatest adventure. Twenty-five years after her first game appeared, Lara continues to explore new territory.

Tomb Raider will be the latest video game adaptation from Netflix, which has previously produced several other shows based on classic gaming franchises, including Dragon's Dogma and the acclaimed Castlevania, which ran for four seasons and will receive an upcoming spinoff series.

Originally created by game designer Toby Gard and a team at Core Design, the original Tomb Raider game debuted in 1996 for the PC, original Sony Playstation and Sega Saturn. The game immediately became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its at-the-time cutting edge gameplay and the appeal of its central character, the millionaire archaeologist Lara Croft. Since then, the series has become a multi-million dollar franchise featuring multiple live-action movies, a comic book series and dozens of video game sequels, remakes and reboots. The various games in the series has sold a total of over 84 million copies worldwide.

Atwell is best known for her role as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Dr. Margaret "Peggy" Carter, one of the founding members of S.H.I.E.L.D. Atwell first took on the role in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger and has since reprised the role multiple times, most notably in the two season ABC series Agent Carter. Atwell is the latest actress to portray Lara Croft; Angelina Jolie portrayed the gun-toting explorer in the 2001 live-action movie adaptation and its sequel, while Alicia Vikander took on the role in the 2018 theatrical reboot, which itself was based on the 2013 video game reboot of the series developed by Crystal Dynamics.
