Netflix has announced that a new 'roulette' feature will be added to the streaming service before July this year. This will allow the service to select a program for users based on their personal preferences.

It will pick a title based on the user's watch history and preferences, rather than requiring them to browse through recommendations. This follows the introduction of "worth the wait," "top 10" and "new and popular" sections Netflix added last year. COO and chief product officer Greg Peters explained, "Our members can basically indicate to us that they want to skip browsing entirely, click one button, and we'll pick a title for them just to instantly play. And that's a great mechanism that’s worked quite for members in that situation." The name of this new feature has not yet been confirmed, but Peters confirmed that it would not be "I'm feeling lucky".

Netflix gained 36.6 million new paid subscribers during 2020 -- due possibly to the huge increase in TV viewing during lockdowns caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This is the company's biggest year to date, beating 2018's 28.6 million.

Despite increasing competition from new streaming services like Disney+, HBO Max and Peacock, the streaming giant plans to retain its edge through Netflix Originals and wider distribution of international films. French heist film Lupin, for example, recently reached number 2 in the US top 10 list, and though the COVID-19 pandemic has caused major disruption in the film industry, Netflix says it plans to release at least one original film a week in 2021 remain unchanged.
