WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Netflix's The Rain, streaming now on Netflix.

Season 2 of Netflix's The Rain switches gears from focusing on virus-laden precipitation sweeping across Scandinavia, creating zombies in its wake, and, instead, focuses on Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) and his sister Simone (Alba August). Rasmus and Simone, along with their crew of rebels, aim to escape Denmark's Quarantine Zone, evading the sinister government science cell known as Apollon as they go.

It's even more perilous this season, as Rasmus is slowly being corrupted by the virus in a way hitherto unseen, manifesting itself as a cloud-symbiote that can kill anything or anyone in the vicinity. As Rasmus battles with the sentient infection, though, his relationship with the symbiote actually turns out to be way better than what we got with Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and his gooey alien in Venom.

Now, don't get us wrong, Venom was a blast for what it was -- a fun-filled ride as Eddie ate up the opposition in a true homage to the '90s comics era, all while trying to stop a full-blown symbiote invasion of Earth. But, ultimately, there was a silly dynamic between him and the symbiote as they cursed and bantered to get each other to step up in the heat of battle. It wasn't scary or intimidating, but rather comical, as Sony always intended. But Rasmus' symbiote instills fear, as it represents something that can literally wipe mankind off the map by just traveling through the air.

When Simone and her fellow scientists at Rokslide try to operate on Rasmus, they realize the boy is "pure virus." It's taken over his bloodstream and is now infecting his neural system, so when they try to extract and experiment, the virus unleashes itself as a dark cloud instantly, killing everyone in the room.

As the season progresses, whenever Rasmus feels threatened, angry or upset, the cloud ravages everything around, beckoning the boy to embrace its power. It doesn't speak, but through the series' sound effects, we can tell there's a language it's using to try and communicate with Rasmus -- beckoning him to give in.

When his friends are threatened, Rasmus controls it (to an extent) to murder his enemies, which is the first hint he's a living, breathing weapon of mass destruction. The way the cloud moves, like a silent killer, engulfing its targets, really leaves a more lasting impression than Venom's rows of teeth and saliva-covered tongue.

Rasmus doesn't speak back to his symbiote, he just uses his eyes to command it, making their relationship feel much more nuanced than Eddie and Venom's. Seeing him struggle when the virus tries to attack his sister adds a lot more emotional heft. Unlike Venom (which cared for Eddie's loved ones), the cloud is willing to annihilate anyone and everyone. This makes Rasmus fear the entity every second that passes.

As Rasmus' friends try to find a cure, poking and prodding at the virus, it mutates into an even deadlier strain than the original version contained in the rain. It comes to a head as we see it manifesting later on in the environment as a black sludge, following Rasmus around slowly across the Danish landscape. He's more or less the Grim Reaper with death literally trailing him, infecting the trees around the facility and any plants he touches. This leads to towns and villages they pass becoming infected, the boy an unwitting agent of chemical warfare.

In the season finale, we see the symbiote unleashed when Rasmus loses control after his girlfriend, Sarah (Clara Rosager), is killed by Apollon soldiers. It turns into an ever bigger cloud, sweeping through the facility, poisoning the gunmen. Rasmus even turns on his own people, but, sadly, when Simone shoots the boy, his body simply spits the bullet back out, allowing him to leave bitter and angry.

This isn't like Eddie who, once separated from Venom, can actually be killed. Rasmus' symbiote is a part of him, in his bloodstream, rendering him nearly immortal. It's bonded to his mind, body and soul, turning the scared boy into a true avatar of extinction, as opposed to a hungry alien that's just into mindless and hilarious violence.
