WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Netflix's The Rain Season 3, streaming now on Netflix.

Netflix's The Rain runs into major problems in its final season when it comes to the show's leading heroes and its power couple, Simone (Alba August) and Martin (Mikkel Følsgaard). They've stood by each other throughout this apocalypse, but with Simone's brother, Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), breaking bad, they're forced apart.

However, when they reunite, it's quite tragic, because Martin actually holds a dark secret inside that threatens to kill Simone. And unfortunately, to save her he ends up committing suicide by the very same thing that could restore humanity's dominance over the planet.

Torn Apart

Simone tried to kill Rasmus last season when she realized he was controlling the virus and turning into a villain. Now, as he's taken over Apollon, Rasmus wants to infect the rest of the world so they can be like him and survive to form a new world order. Simone escapes, however, and jumps into a lake, leaving Martin thinking she died.

With nothing left to live for, Martin offers up himself, and Rasmus infects the soldier, making him one of the chosen. Martin believes in Rasmus' cause now, although the hive mind effect and corruption of Rasmus' mind seems to be breaking Martin down mentally and turning him into a metaphorical monster as well. Simone was truly his moral compass, so he's very much lost without her.

The Dark Reunion

Martin ends up discovering she's alive, however, when her tracker's turned back on. She's trying to figure out a way to use a cure she stumbled upon with Daniel's family outside the quarantine zone, but when Martin get to her, he spots Daniel kissing her. He grows jealous, even though she later tells him she doesn't love Daniel. Martin doesn't let her know he visited the purple flower with the cure and it sucked some of the virus out of him.

Martin asks Simone to leave, as he wants to take her back so Rasmus can infect her. His virus will kill her, not infect her, so he needs her to believe in her brother again so she can be like them. But Simone -- who doesn't know what's up with Martin's body -- reveals she has to stop Rasmus and shows Martin the vial with the nectar from the flower. Martin grows angry because killing Rasmus as the main host could kill them. And so, when Simone flees from him after seeing he's infected, the virus leaves him to try to kill her.

The Big Sacrifice

Still, Martin's humanity shows through, as he tries to pull the virus back into himself. It's clawing its way to Simone after cornering her, but Martin finally accepts that Rasmus has to die. He forces his way to the vial -- which broke when Simone fell -- and while the virus grapples with him to ensure he doesn't get to the cure, Martin is able to consume the last few droplets.

This kills the virus. However, the virus is connected to his mind and body, so Martin dies, too. Since Rasmus is connected to his minions, he realizes the loss and that Simone has a means of killing him. Martin's death breaks Simone's heart, but she knows he gave his life so she could use the cure to stop Rasmus and save the world.
