WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Rain Season 3, streaming now on Netflix.

In its first two seasons, Netflix's The Rain shocked fans by not offering any clues at all that a cure existed for the virus infecting Europe. All they knew was that Apollon was the sinister company that engineered it, only for the infection to backfire, and young Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen) is the alpha host controlling it.

However, Season 3 takes an unexpected turn when it's discovered that a cure's out there. But it incurs a heavy cost as Rasmus' sister, Simone (Alba August), tries to save the world from her brother -- now a tyrant trying to infect everyone else.

When Simone flees Apollon and her brother's treacherous plan, she ends up outside the quarantine zone at Daniel's home. She meets his family, who hate that a stranger is now connecting with them, but the little sister, Luna, bonds with her and reveals a secret yellow nectar solution that stops the black spread in the forest. In fact, it restores the lush greenery so Simone immediately thinks it should be taken to scientists who would mass produce.

But as she debates with Daniel's reluctant family, the toll is hefty, starting with Luna who gets kidnapped by scavengers. Simone feels guilty and she reveals the truth about the nectar to them, but when the group, mostly teens, comes for the plant, Simone finds them gutted. Daniel then reveals the plant is like a creature, sucking the virus out and feeding on it, but also going on the defensive when threatened. It recoils, curls up its flowers and hides the nectar, but it can also emit sonic booms that destroy the abandoned factory's walls it's in.

It's a bloody, brutal sequence that gets worse when Martin, Simone's boyfriend, comes to find her. He thinks it's a rescue mission but he quickly realizes this newfound cure can kill him as Rasmus infected Martin when he felt Simone was dead. He tries to leave, but when the virus senses Simone has a vial of the cure, it attacks her only for Martin to consume it and die. This brings Rasmus and his other infected legion to the fray, and as he has a telepathic link to Martin, causing them to go after Simone, not realizing what the cure actually is. When they confront each other in the finale, thankfully, Rasmus finds a bit of his humanity along with his infected girlfriend, Sarah, and they allow the plant to kill them, along with all the infected ones.

The flower doesn't care if people are redeemed or not, it doesn't discriminate once it thinks people are exploiting it so this sentience has it treating them and threats alike. Simone now has to bury the only people she considers family and takes the flower into the city hoping mankind can help her out. It knows Rasmus is dead, so it's ready to heal the world again. However, it's bittersweet because everyone from Simone to the innocent Luna saw death beyond belief. Not to mention they don't know if the alien-like flower will someday turn on humanity. It's a gamble and while Simone's already in debt, she risks it all on the nectar project. She wants to honor Rasmus and Martin, but one can tell she didn't want to lose them in order to achieve salvation.
