Netflix provides viewers with a special peek at the set of the highly-anticipated film The Old Guard 2.
The brief video, released as a part of Netflix's TUDUM event, sees the cast of the comic book movie offering fans an update on the sequel's development, providing a quick look at the movie's set and production. While no specific details regarding the plot and characters were shared, star Charlize Theron does reassure viewers that development is progressing steadily.
Beyond the brief look behind the scenes, details on The Old Guard 2 remain shrouded in mystery. After the success of the first film, which debuted on Netflix in 2020, Theron confirmed that a follow-up was officially in development in 2021, with cameras currently rolling on the comic book adaptation. The Rise of Skywalker's second-unit director Victoria Mahoney is helming the sequel, an opportunity that both thrilled and surprised her when it was offered. "Genuinely blown backwards by the collective levels of talent, skill and savvy that went into carving The Old Guard," Mahoney said. "I must've watched it over a hundred times, and as such, cannot communicate the true measure of my excitement -- being invited on The Old Guard journey alongside ferocious badasses.
The Old Guard Grows
Beyond Theron, The Old Guard 2 sports an all-star cast of returning actors including Kiki Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts and Marwan Kenzari. The sequel is confirmed to feature Uma Thurman and Henry Golding in roles that have yet to be disclosed at the time of writing.
Based on the comic books written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Leandro Fernandez, The Old Guard follows Theron's Andromache of Scythia aka Andy as the leader of a secret group of highly-trained immortal mercenaries who have operated across the world for centuries. Yet when the wrong person learns of their existence, the group must fight for their survival.
Upon its release, The Old Guard earned glowing reviews from fans and critics alike. While some reviewers felt that the story fell into some conventional tropes, many noted that the cast and writing, as well as the direction by Gina Prince-Bythewood, elevated the production to something above a standard by-the-numbers action movie.
The Old Guard 2 does not yet have a release date.
