Sony Pictures and Netflix have teamed up to develop Matilda the Musical into a feature-length adaptation, which will receive a full theatrical and home video run in the United Kingdom before being added to Netflix for subscribers to enjoy.

According to THR, details on how the companies intend on splitting the cost of the production or when exactly the movie will be added to Netflix are still in the negotiation phase. However, it's believed Sony feels there's a benefit in releasing Matilda the Musical in cinemas, albeit it exclusively in the U.K.

Written by Roald Dahl, the 1988 novel Matilda centers on a young, precocious girl with unloving parents who eventually discovers she has telekinetic powers, which she uses to play pranks on her parents and her school's cruel headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. In 1996, the book was adapted into a film starring Mara Wilson and Danny DeVito, and while it failed to resonate at the box office, it went on to achieve something of a cult following.

Matilda the Musical, meanwhile, has been running in London since 2011 and has been brought to stages across the globe, including a run on Broadway from 2013 until its end in 2017. In that time, the show put on 1,555 performances and won four Tony Awards.

The film adaptation of Matilda the Musical will be directed by Matthew Warchus, who also helmed the stage musical. At the time of this writing, no casting information or targeted release date have been announced.
