Netflix won the most Academy Awards this year of any studio, with a total haul of seven Oscars.

David Fincher's Mank, the most nominated film this year with 10 nominations, ended up winning two Oscars: Cinematography (for Erik Messerschmidt) and Production Design (for Donald Graham Burt and Jan Pascale). Ma Rainey's Black Bottom also won two awards: Makeup and Hairstyling (for Mia Neal, Jamika Wilson and Sergio Lopez-Rivera) and Costume Design (Ann Roth).

Netflix's sleeper hit documentary My Octopus Teacher continued its awards-season momentum to win the Best Documentary Oscar. The winners for Live-Action Short Film (Two Distant Strangers) and Animated Short Film (If Anything Happens, I Love You) are also Netflix releases.

Netflix led the Oscar nomination totals with 36 nominations, including Best Picture nominations for Mank and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Every Oscar category this year except for Best International Film contained at least one nomination for a Netflix film.

However, the streaming service has yet to win a Best Picture Oscar, despite lavish campaigns for the likes of Roma and The Irishman. Nomadland, a FOX Searchlight film released streaming on Hulu, ended up winning Best Picture, Director and Actress.

In the night's biggest upset, Chadwick Boseman, heavily predicted to win Best Actor posthumously for his role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, shockingly lost the award to Anthony Hopkins in The Father.
