Netflix's The Sandman TV series has reportedly added Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie to its cast.
According to Discussing Film, Christie has joined the show's ensemble in an as-yet-unknown role. Christie is best known for playing Brienne of Tarth in HBO's Game of Thrones and Captain Phasma in the most recent Star Wars sequel trilogy. She also recently worked with The Sandman comic book co-creator and writer Neil Gaiman on a radio adaptation of his novel The Sleeper and the Spindle.
An adaptation of the Vertigo Comics series of the same name, Netflix's The Sandman will center on Morpheus, aka Dream, the keeper of dreams. He is one of the seven entities known as the Endless, which are the personifications of the concepts of Destruction, Death, Desire, Despair, Delirium (who was once Delight) and Destiny. The Sandman cast Tom Sturridge as Dream in September 2020, but there haven't been any official casting announcements since then.
The Sandman TV show was scheduled to begin production in April last year, before being halted due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It finally began shooting the following October in the United Kingdom, with Gaiman promising more casting announcements would soon follow. Gaiman has since hinted at the identity of the actor playing Death, describing her as a "perfect" choice. "[Death's] sensibleness and love is manifest in this actress," said Gaiman. "I don’t think anybody is going to have any complaints."
Gaiman is serving as an executive producer and co-writer on Netflix's The Sandman, along with Krypton co-creator David S. Goyer. Marvel's Young Avengers creator Allan Heinberg is acting as showunner on the series, in addition to serving as a co-writer and executive producer. Back in November 2019, Gaiman confirmed he, Goyer and Heinberg had already started planning out The Sandman's Season 2 story. For the time being, however, Netflix has yet to formally renew the series for a second season.
The Sandman is the latest of Gaiman's works to be adapted for the small screen in recent years. His American Gods novel was adapted into the Starz TV series of the same name, which recently kicked off its third season. Gaiman also served as showrunner on Amazon's Good Omens miniseries, which was based on the book he co-wrote with the late Terry Pratchett.
Netflix has yet to set a release date for The Sandman.
