The latest trailer for Netflix's live-action Resident Evil series sets up the show's zombie-infested story.
The trailer begins in Umbrella Corporation, where Albert Wesker (Lance Reddick) introduces the company to Joy, a drug that has the ability to treat several significant illnesses. Despite the seemingly miraculous potential of the pill, the medication includes a dose of the T-Virus, the source of the original zombie outbreak in Spencer Mansion in the original Resident Evil video game. The new clips also reveal better looks at several monsters franchise fans will undoubtedly recognize, including a giant spider and a Licker.
While little is currently known about Resident Evil's plot, Netflix revealed that the series will follow Albert Wesker and his daughters Billie and Jade both before and after the spread of the deadly virus. Set in both 2022 and 2036, the show will predominantly focus on Jade as she attempts to survive in the post-apocalypse, trying to come to terms with the death of her sister while living in the shadow of her evil father.
As for how Resident Evil connects to Capcom's broader franchise, showrunner Andrew Dabb revealed that the video games are canon in the series. "The games are our backstory. Everything that happens in the games exists in this world," Dabb said. "We may not get to [Resident Evil: Village] until Season 5, but it is in our world. As we're moving ahead and talking about scripts for Season 2, the village is a resource we can draw on."
Speaking about his role in Resident Evil, Reddick revealed that he had never heard of the video games before he took on the role of Wesker. "Interestingly enough... I had never played any of the Resident Evil games," said Reddick. "For years, I always thought the movies were standalone things. I never knew they were connected to anything. I didn't really know anything about Albert Wesker when this project came up."
Reddick went on to clarify that while fans may initially be confused by his portal of Resident Evil's most iconic villain, the series will clarify his role as the story unfolds. "Fans of the games might have the reaction when they first start watching the show, 'This guy is Albert Wesker?' Then as the show goes on, they'll go, 'Oh! Yeah, this guy is Albert Wesker!'" Reddick explained.
Resident Evil hits Netflix on July 14.
