After several years in development, Netflix finally released its live-action Resident Evil series. The show, however, has been unable to impress fans of the horror video game franchise, who are coming out to leave overwhelmingly negative reviews online.

Review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes shows the show is largely disliked by viewers and holds an audience score of just 25 percent. The fan reviews posted for the show largely cite deviations from the video game franchise and the visual effects as points of criticism, though audiences who have not expressed any familiarity with the video games appear to be far more accepting of the Netflix series, though they had a different collection of criticisms for the series.

For comparison, Netflix's Resident Evil has a critic score of 51 percent, with reviewers calling out the show's use of tired cliches and a lackluster plot, though many also enjoyed the show for its action sequences and take on the horror franchise. CBR's own Lissete Lanuza Sáenz described Resident Evil as a visually striking affair with a solid lead surrounded by relatively weak characters.

The Story of Resident Evil

Netflix's Resident Evil is set long after the events of the games and follows Jade Wesker, played as a teenager by Tamara Smart and as an adult by Ella Balinska; and Billie Wesker, played by Siena Agudong. It features two main plotlines, one taking place in 2022 and another set in 2036.

It was reported earlier this year that Season 2 of the Netflix series had already entered development, with showrunner Andrew Dabb teasing there are plans for seasons beyond that. He hinted the next season may draw elements from Resident Evil Village and involve a fan-favorite character, Ada Wong. Back in May, he explained, "The games are our backstory. Everything that happens in the games exists in this world... We may not get [to the village] until Season 5, but it is in our world. As we're moving ahead and talking about scripts for Season 2, the village is a resource we can draw on."

The Resident Evil video game franchise began in 1996 with Capcom's Resident Evil on PC and PlayStation. The game introduced S.T.A.R.S. agents Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine, who are sent to investigate a series of murders in Raccoon City, which leads them to uncover a series of bio-weapon experiments by the Umbrella Corporation and a plot involving one of their own.

Season 1 of Resident Evil is available for streaming on Netflix.
