Netflix's live-action television adaptation of Resident Evil will not return for a second season on the platform.

According to Variety, Netflix has canceled Resident Evil after one season. The video game adaptation premiered its eight episodes last month on July 14. During its debut week, Resident Evil was streamed for over 72 million hours, making it the second-most-watched show on Netflix that week, behind Stranger Things Season 4. Resident Evil dropped to the number three spot during its second week in release and fell out of Netflix's top 10 entirely by week three.

A History of Resident Evil Adaptations

Capcom's acclaimed Resident Evil series of survival horror games began in 1996, with the franchise's eighth and most recent main-series entry, Resident Evil Village, releasing last year. Netflix's now-canceled series marks only the latest attempt to bring the franchise to live-action. From 2002 to 2016, Sony released a hexalogy of live-action Resident Evil films. While the first two films were predominantly well-received by audiences, the latter four were not. Furthermore, all six films failed to impress critics.

Last year, Sony put out a live-action reboot film titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Like Sony's first two Resident Evil films, the reboot did manage to win over a significant percentage of viewers, though was largely dismissed by critics. Prior to its live-action series adaptation of the video game franchise, Netflix released the CG anime series Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness, which also came out last year. The anime was met with mixed-to-negative reception from critics and audiences alike.
