An adaptation of hit Image Comics series The Old Guard, co-produced by Skydance Media, has officially been picked up by Netflix.
Created by Greg Rucka (Gotham Central) and Leandro Fernandez (The Punisher) in 2016, the comic follows a team of immortal soldiers fighting through the history of war, only to an encounter an enemy immortal who threatens them all. Rucka is attached to write the screenplay, with Gina Prince-Bythewood (Cloak & Dagger) signed on to direct the adaptation.
A film adaptation of The Old Guard had first been optioned in 2017 by Skydance. Charlize Theron has signed on to star in the film with KiKi Layne (If Beale Street Could Talk). This marks Theron's second recent foray into adapting comic books for action films, following her role starring in and producing 2017's Atomic Blonde, an adaptation of Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's Oni Press graphic novel The Coldest City.
Netflix's option also marks the latest comic book film adaptation by the premium streaming service, with Victor Santos' Polar, starring Mads Mikkelsen, premiering on the platform last month.
