What Is Netflix's The Recruit?

The Recruit follows newly hired CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Centineo) who has his world completely turned upside down when he crosses paths with an asset who demands exoneration from the agency. Once she tries to expose her long-standing relationship with the CIA, Owen becomes involved in massive international conflicts with dangerous adversaries. As he tries to negotiate with the asset, Owen finds himself at odds with nefarious people as he risks his life to fulfill his duties. The series also stars Fival Stewart, Vondie Curtis Hall, Kristian Brunn, Aarti Mann, Colton Dunn and Daniel Quincy Annoh.

After premiering on Dec. 16 on the streamer, The Recruit spent five weeks on the Netflix TV Global Top 10, and it reached the Top 10 in 88 countries. To go along with its solid global performance, the show also received decent reviews from critics, scoring a 67 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a consensus that the show "employs Noah Centineo's considerable charms to highly watchable effect." In addition to starring on the series, Centineo also serves as an executive producer.

Centineo had a very busy year last year with the release of the series and his role as Atom Smasher in DC's Black Adam. When speaking to CBR, Hawley discussed why Centineo was the right choice to take on the role of Owen. "He is super-talented, incredibly charming, really smart, and at the end of the day, he is also incredibly accessible," the showrunner said. "He feels like a blue-collar guy. That's how he grew up with his family. So, there's that genuineness to him that undercuts whatever stardom actors can get painted with. It was that exuberant youthful, 'Fuck it. I can do anything' attitude, which was the heart of the character."

The Recruit is currently streaming on Netflix.
