A prologue novel was written and released by Ubukata in December 2018. Netflix describes Moonrise as "a fateful story of the resistance forces on the moon who challenge[s] the peaceful inhabitants of Earth to battle." In addition to Ubukata and Arakawa, Ayumi Yamada will also be doing the character design. Yamada acted as the animation director for a few episodes of Attack on Titan and Mob Psycho 100. There Is Powerhouse Creative Talent Behind Moonrise

Arakawa's career first began in 1999 when she published Stray Dog, but it wasn't until she wrote Fullmetal Alchemist in 2001 that her career took off. Fullmetal Alchemist is a steampunk series that follows the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, who fail to resurrect their mother using a forbidden practice. In the process, Alphonse loses his physical body, leaving his soul untethered, and Edward loses his right arm and left leg. Ed manages to bind his brother's soul, through alchemy, to a suit of armor. The two of them go on a journey to find the Philosopher's Stone to restore them back to their original bodies.

Ubukata debuted as a short story writer in 1996 but has worked as both a novelist and a screenwriter in his career. His screenwriting credits not only include the two seasons of Psycho-Pass but includes RWBY: Ice Queendom and Ghost in the Shell: Arise. His cyberpunk novel series Mardock Scramble, first published in 2003, received two adaptations: a manga and anime film trilogy. He also contributed to the screenplay for the animation of his next work Le Chevalier D'Eon, which is a historical fantasy.

Ubukata's prologue novel for Moonrise can be read on Amazon. The anime will stream on Netflix sometime in 2024.
