A massive new survey has revealed the biggest franchises and standalone films and TV shows in entertainment—and some of the results are surprising.

Variety has an exclusive report on a huge undertaking by strategy firm NRG, who conducted more than 350,000 interviews to find out what the future holds for audience-friendly entertainment. Covering everything from TV and movies to video games, the surveys asked consumers what franchises and media they most loved, what was the boldest, what resonated with various demographics and more to learn what franchises could continue to grow and adapt in the years to come. The overall top 20 was, unsurprisingly, dominated by Marvel properties, with The AvengersBlack PantherGuardians of the GalaxyBlack Widow and more Marvel Cinematic Universe properties landing a spot. Outside of the MCU, Deadpool fell just outside the top 10, while Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse landed the ninth spot, with Spider-Man as a broader franchise also landing in the top 20. Check out the full top 20 ranking from NRG below:

Despite the dominance of Marvel, The Mandalorian actually claimed the top spot, the only Star Wars entry to do so. With the series currently introducing elements from across the Star Wars timeline, like the live-action debut of Ahsoka Tano, it seems audiences see a growing future for the TV series. And with numerous spinoffs rumored, they aren't wrong. Netflix also scored a number of top hits, including Stranger Things and The Witcher, the latter of which also has life in video game and book form to help boost its appeal. Most shocking, however, is the inclusion of Ozark, landing in the top 10 despite being a relatively contained universe with no spinoffs or outside media—at least for now.

Other standouts include Coco, another non-franchise that clearly has wide appeal, and Mario Bros., which primarily exists as a video game despite a few unsuccessful attempts at moving into other forms of media. An upcoming CG Super Mario film, however, could play into the game's franchise ranking.

The surveys also delved into popular Gen Z content, with Euphoria and On My Block ranking high, along with franchises that resonate with Black audiences, with Queen SugarAtlantaInsecure and Black Lightning all ranking high, the latter of which the only reported showing of a DC property in the prominent survey results. Overall, NRG believes that old and new franchises, media with bold visions and diversity of perspectives will dominate the entertainment landscape in the years to come.
