As featured in the trailer, Love, Death + Robots: Volume 3 will include a sequel to "Three Robots," the popular episode from the series' first installment. The return of these three robots was revealed by series creator and Deadpool director Tim Miller and supervising director Jennifer Yuh Nelson in May 2021. "Some characters are coming back. Three of them, three characters. Three robots are actually returning for a sequel," said Nelson.

Based on a short story by John Scalzi, the story was originally adapted for Volume 1 and its Volume 3 sequel will be written by Scalzi. "We enjoyed working with [Scalzi] so much and those stories were so popular...," Miller said. "I don't know if there's an accurate judge of popularity, but 'Zima Blue' and 'Three Robots' and 'The Witness' were pretty regularly listed as favorites, and 'Three Robots' because it's so fucking funny."

Love, Death + Robots was created by Miller and executive produced by David Fincher, premiering on Netflix in 2019. Volume 1 was comprised of 18 short films, 16 of which were adapted from science fiction short stories, such as Scalzi's "Three Robots Experience Objects Left Behind from the Era of Humans for the First Time."

As it was also pointed out in the trailer, Love, Death + Robots has won two Emmy Awards since its release, including the award for Outstanding Short-Form Animated Program for the episode "The Witness."

Love, Death + Robots Vol. 2 is now streaming on Netflix. Vol. 3 will be released in 2022.
