That definitely isn't the kitschy robot we remember in Netflix's first full-length trailer for Lost in Space, a reboot of the 1960s sci-fi cult classic.
Of course, it's not only the robot that's different in this deadly serious reimagining of Irwin Allen's TV show. For one, low-budget sets have been exchanged for location shoots and high-quality effects; for another, that's Parker Posey as the villainous Dr. Smith. The catchphrase, "Danger, Will Robinson," remains the same, however.
Well, maybe Posey's Smith isn't so much villainous as she is "complicated." "If you have any hope of saving your family," she says, "you will help me." That may or may not be a threat.
The 1965 original series followed the Robinson family, who are selected by the U.S. government to colonize a planet of the nearby Alpha Centauri system. However, their ship is sabotaged by foreign secret agent Dr. Zachary Smith, who’s trapped inside as the Jupiter 2 veers off course and is … lost in space. Although the first season was more serious in tone, in the second season the series became more campy as it tried to compete against ABC’s Batman.
Premiering April 13, Netflix’s Lost in Space stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails) as Dr. John Robinson, Molly Parker (Deadwood) as Dr. Maureen Robinsin, Taylor Russell (Falling Skies) as Judy Robinson, Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson, Maxwell Jenkins (Betrayal) as Will Robinson, Parker Posey as Dr. Smith and Ignacio Serricchio as the ship’s pilot, Don West.
