WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Kingdom, streaming now on Netflix.

Netflix's Kingdom continues its zombie-infested story about an outbreak during Korea's Joseon period in the 16th century. Season 1 dealt with the crown prince Lee Chang being exiled from rulership thanks to his father's bodyguard, Cho, all so his daughter and Chang's much-younger step-mom could take the throne after they infected the king.

The political drama in Season 2 sees Chang trying to get back to the Citadel to reclaim his throne after evidence arose it was a quiet coup as Cho's family was conspiring against the royal court. There are many twists and turns, though, because the legion of the undead is able to move in daylight, making it more difficult for Chang's fellowship. However, as the ragtag group of warriors makes it back to the palace, the season finale ends on a gory note, with a key revelation about a conspiracy centuries in the making, spanning beyond the Cho takeover.

THE BATTLE AT THE LAKE

Chang uses his political sway to get integral members of the royal council on his side, allowing his squad to infiltrate and take back the Citadel. The people have suffered under the Cho regime and want their benevolent prince to be king, but when the Queen kills her somewhat repentant dad after he found out the son she sired wasn't really hers, she has her handmaidens, who for all intents and purposes are a cult, sacrifice themselves to a zombie horde.

They turn and run amok in the Citadel, with their victims reanimating in seconds. All hell breaks loose and for an entire afternoon, Chang's soldiers fend off the growing swarm. Even Queen Cho's bitten and as the numbers swell, in the dark of night, Chang comes up with a suicide mission that takes his warriors to head out to the frozen lake outside the palace. They shoot up the ice and as the horde arrives, including the undead queen, Chang breaks the ice in battle so they all fall in.

The heroes are all bit but Chang and three other soldiers survive as cold water stops the infection. The zombies drown and are then recovered the next day and burnt so that the plague is considered over. Chang, though, has one more order of business and it's to kill the baby Queen Cho stole because it's illegitimate.

Kingdom - The Queen

However, Chang can't drop the sword on the kid, even after seeing it's been bitten by zombies too. His medical advisor, Seo-Bi, kept the child safe during the war and makes it clear he'd be a healthy kid. Chang also doesn't want to murder it because it's the son of his deceased Hand, Moo-Young. On top off all that, the prince believes because he had to kill his zombie father, there's a cloud of dishonor over him and he just wants the stain of war to be removed.

This is why he swears his council to secrecy so he can pass the child off as Queen Cho's son, to become the new king. The series jumps forward seven years and the young king is indeed a kind ruler, although with the empire rebuilt, he finds it odd history has been altered and the plague details have been stricken. Obviously, it's to protect the lie, but things quickly take a dark turn in the final moments of the episode.

Seo-Bi revealed earlier this season the infection's caused by worms initially found in the Resurrection Plant. Each bite from a zombie transmits worm eggs that quickly affect people's brains, turning them into zombies, but water stops it upon immediate application. Additionally, babies are immune as their brains aren't fully developed. The last point's up for debate, however, because when the king's asleep, worms crawl underneath his skin and towards his brains.

THE PIRATE QUEEN

In these seven years, Chang, Seo-Bi and a small crew have been tracking the plant down and they discover it was sold to Korean vendors by Chinese operatives. These poor, unwitting farmers planted it all over the country and hoped to sell it off so the infection is still littered everywhere, it's just dormant. Eventually, Chang's team finds a rural, mountainous region that seems to be the source, and at night, their worst fears come true.

He hears bells and sees a rabid young girl coming at him, and he decapitates her. They hear more bells so they're anticipating the attack, being able to tell someone's been keeping zombies as pets, and possibly training them. The final scene cuts to a mysterious Pirate Queen in a room overhearing the commotion outside. It appears she's in a lab, with chains and body parts visible and restrained zombies being experimented on. She gives the camera a wry smile as it seems she's the person in charge of this war on Korea and who decided zombies would be the best way of unsettling the country during feudal times.

Kingdom stars Ju Ji-hoon, Ryu Seung-ryong and Bae Doo-na. Season 2 is currently streaming on Netflix.
