The Orbital Children is written and directed by veteran filmmaker Mitsuo Iso, who is likely best known for his animation work on 2003's Kill Bill: Volume 1, 1995's Ghost in the Shell and several entries in the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise. He also worked for Studio Ghibli from 1990 to 1992. His new story is set in the year 2045 and follows a group of children who are left behind on a recently opened commercial space station after a massive accident. With little hope of rescue, the children must utilize their own skills and the limited tools at hand to survive the crisis.

Joining Iso on the creative team is character designer Kenichi Yoshida (Eureka Seven AO), and color designer Miho Tanaka (Burn the Witch). Toshiyuki Inoue (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon A Time) serves as the main animator, Yusuke Ikeda (Great Pretender) as the art director and Youji Shimizu (Lupin the 3rd: Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid) as the sound director.

Iso's new project is one of several upcoming anime titles that are set to premiere on Netflix earlier next year. Other examples include Bubble, which is an original anime film by the streaming service and WIT Studio (Vivy: Fluorite Eye's Song) and is set to premiere on April 28, 2022, and director Takana Shirai (Berserk: The Golden Age Arc I: The Egg of the King) and Liden Films' Child of Kamiari Month, which is scheduled to debut on Feb. 8, 2022.

Netflix will release The Orbital Children as a six-episode series on Jan. 28, 2022. In Japan, it will premiere as two films, with Part 1 also debuting on Jan. 28 and Part 2 releasing on Feb. 11, 2022.
