Takashi Shimizu, the creator of Ju-on and The Grudge, has a new spine-tingling film streaming on Netflix called Homunculus.The new thriller was adapted from Hideo Yamamoto's cult classic manga series. Yamamoto's Homunculus manga series has 15 volumes and ran from 2003-2011. The series, with more than 4 million copies in circulation, was inspired by the process of trepanation, a surgical procedure that involves drilling a hole in the skull.

Shimizu is well-known for his ability to terrify audiences. Alongside The Grudge series, he also directed the 2001 movie version of Junji Ito's classic Tomie manga series.

Shimizu launched the Ju-On franchise in 1998 with a series of short films inspired by his childhood fears, and he went on to direct four of the series' most popular theatrical outings. The 2004 American adaptation, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, made over $187 million worldwide and is viewed as the second-highest-grossing horror remake. The Grudge follows an American woman who encounters a vengeful curse after moving to Tokyo. After deaths start occurring around her, she must find a way to stop it before she becomes the curse's next victim.

Directed by Takashi Shimizu, Homunculus stars Go Ayano and Ryo Narita. The film is now available on Netflix.
