Netflix is not consistently opposed to canceling series, as it has done in the past with popular ones like Sense8 and The Get Down. The streaming service also has plenty of popular shows that have run for four, five, or even more seasons. Grace and Frankie currently remains Netflix's longest-running series to date, having concluded its run after seven successful seasons. However, there's another show poised to snatch this honor away.

Grace and Frankie ranks among the best long-running shows, meaning those with at least four seasons. As such, it's in good company with several others that Netflix fans enjoy, such as the supernatural Stranger Things and the hit prison show Orange Is The New Black. That said, there are a lot more long-running shows on Netflix for fans to watch, and they come in a wide range of genres.

Updated on March 1, 2024, by Ajay Aravind: Netflix has become infamous for canceling shows before they even get a chance to spread their wings. On the other hand, there are a few gems that have maintained their course. As such, we've updated this list with more entries as well as information.

How Cobra Kai Made The Karate Kid Part III Credible
The Karate Kid Part III was considered one of the worst films of the franchise, but thanks to Cobra Kai, people seem to look at it a bit differently.

The Karate Kid franchise may have gone off the deep end with multiple sequels and remakes, but Cobra Kai managed to breathe new life into this martial arts universe. Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their iconic characters, Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, this time as men going through a midlife crisis. Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai dojo under his leadership, acquiring a number of talented pupils in the process.

Johnny and Danny are at constant loggerheads for the first few seasons, until they eventually join hands to defeat Kreese and Silver. There's a lot of fun to be had watching Cobra Kai, and Karate Kid fans will certainly love it. That said, the series could have technically ended two seasons ago, which is why we have ranked Cobra Kai at the bottom of this list.

With Laura Linney and Jason Bateman as the lead actors, it's no surprise that Ozark became extremely popular extremely quickly. However, the story didn't really pick up until Season 3, when all hell broke loose. Ozark bears a passing resemblance to Breaking Bad in that both shows have the Mexican drug cartel and money laundering at their epicenters.

In terms of character development, however, these two series couldn't be more different. Multiple crime families become involved in the protagonists' lives, bringing so much more tension to the already tense table. Ozark went on to earn dozens of nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards, with Julia Garner racking up three Outstanding Supporting Actress wins. With four seasons on Netflix, viewers can expect some truly engrossing storylines from Ozark.

Tom Ellis Saved Lucifer With a Tweet and a Positive Fan Community
How Netflix saved Lucifer from cancellation and renewed it twice is one of streaming's biggest success stories, and it began with a Tom Ellis Tweet.

Technically, Lucifer is not a Netflix original, but it's one of many popular shows that the streaming service saved. Following its cancelation on Fox, Netflix picked up the show and produced the final three seasons. This gave fans the satisfaction of seeing the story of the Devil who decided to take a break and live out his wildest dreams in Los Angeles the closure it deserved. Indeed, many fans found the finale of Lucifer satisfying.

Lucifer Morningstar living a life of indulgence and committing every one of the seven deadly sins was hilarious on its own. Add his ability to read peoples' deepest desires and one female detective who seems to be the exception, and it's the perfect mix. Lucifer is part police procedural, part urban fantasy, and part romance, all of which come together to make the show a worthwhile watch.

A Spanish TV series that became popular all over the world, Money Heist is still one of the most-watched series ever in Netflix's history. This show follows a group of criminals as they try to rob the Royal Mint of Spain, in an ambitious, dangerous, and epic heist that quickly hooks the viewers. Even though Money Heist was supposed to only have two seasons, the show's global success earned the series three extra seasons.

Netflix has also released two documentaries surrounding this series, Money Heist: The Phenomenon and Money Heist: From Tokyo to Berlin. There's also a spin-off, Berlin, and a South Korean remake, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area. Unfortunately, there's only so much that can be done with such a specific concept. Audiences enjoyed all the seasons of Money Heist, but the absence of consistent stakes is why we've ranked it below several other Netflix series.

A wholesome show about the struggles of an Indian teenage girl, Never Have I Ever proved that teen shows can deal with a lot of drama and still be lighthearted. The series portrays the difficulties that Devi faces after the death of her father while she tries to have the best high school experience. Never Have I Ever is a show with a diverse cast and great representation, making it one of the best Netflix shows.

What's more, the show concluded with a natural ending as Devi grew up through the seasons, so the audience was incredibly happy with this well-written series. Considering the lack of Indian-American representation in popular culture, Never Have I Ever stands proudly with other popular shows like Ms. Marvel and The Mindy Project.

Kevin Spacey Revives House of Cards Character to Slam Netflix in Christmas Eve Video
Kevin Spacey has teamed up with Tucker Carlson to slam Netflix and address the 2024 election.

The political drama genre has only been getting better since The West Wing, but House of Cards ramps it up several notches. Adapted from Michael Dobbs' eponymous novel, this is the first show to make Netflix a household name. There are few characters as morally sleazy as Frank and Claire Underwood, both of whom hatch a convoluted scheme to acquire more political power.

House of Cards, as its name suggests, demonstrates the fragility of the American political system, while simultaneously highlighting all the manipulation and treachery that goes on within. The show earned critical praise and audience appreciation, as well as dozens of awards. However, the sexual misconduct allegations filed against Kevin Spacey effectively shattered the show. The final season, sans Spacey's presence, received the lowest critical score of all.

The Twilight Zone-inspired series moved from British Channel 4 to Netflix after its first two seasons. The speculative fiction series looks at 21st-century technology and the worst-case scenarios in the future should society continue on various paths.

These concepts range from developing intelligent robots and being obsessed with social media to surreal AI fabrications. It's heavy, shocking, and brilliantly made, making Black Mirror a show that fans are excited about. To call Dear White People controversial would be an understatement. The show received so much heckling for its focus on African-American lives that its IMDb rating is considerably lower than the Tomatometer score. This is a result of vote brigading on IMDb, causing numerous users to give the show only 1 star. All things considered, however, Dear White People is one of the best shows on Netflix.

It deals with the causes and outcomes of racism, but there's also mystery, drama, intrigue, elaborate fantasy sequences, and a phenomenal music score. Dear White People forces everyone to open their eyes and see reality for what it is, and that includes the show's main characters. Nobody is perfect, nobody really holds the moral high ground, but everyone needs to face the consequences of their actions. The message is skewed but it's there.

Streaming for four seasons, Tina Fey is behind Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, a sitcom about a young woman who is rescued from an underground bunker after 15 years of captivity. The premise of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt sounds dark, but it's a hilarious show about making the most out of life and reinventing oneself. Especially after re-entering a world that has drastically changed in a decade and a half. Along with the main series episodes, there was also an interactive special that picked up years later. It's no surprise fans think the show is one of many sitcoms that needs another season.

Orange is the New Black is the second longest-running series in Netflix history since Grace and Frankie had an extended 16-episode final season. Based on the real-life experiences of Piper Kerman, the show tells the story of a wealthy young woman who winds up in prison after getting involved with a drug dealer. The story only gets more complicated from that point onwards.

Featuring a largely female, racially diverse cast, Orange is the New Black was praised for depicting women in a raw and honest way. While Piper was originally the star, the show eventually began to focus on many of the other main characters and their experiences while doing time in a minimum-security women's prison. Despite its multiple nominations at the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes, Orange is the New Black didn't enthrall viewers as much as the top Netflix series.

However, BoJack Horseman ended up lasting an impressive six seasons and was widely praised for both the voice acting and the storylines.

Big Mouth is strange — it's like nothing anyone has ever seen before. If studio execs in the 1990s and earlier were told that they could make an animated sitcom about puberty, one that would cross all known boundaries of propriety and shame, the show would have never been greenlit. Thankfully, however, there was no such problem in 2017. Big Mouth stretches the imagination to breaking point while, at the same time, expounding wisely on the nuances of childhood development.

Even though Stranger Things will be ending after its fifth and final season, the '80s set sci-fi horror drama remains the most popular that Netflix has to offer. Following a group of kids who come upon a young girl with mysterious powers, the story weaves into a scary alternate dimension known as the Upside Down. The heroes have to deal with monsters, creatures, strange happenings, missing children, death, destruction, and mind control, but they still win every time.

Stranger Things is also a love letter to the '80s and reminiscent of popular movies of that decade, like The Goonies and Nightmare on Elm Street. It's not only one of Netflix's best long-running shows but also one of the best shows of the decade. The sheer pop-cultural impact of Stranger Things has partially established the era of television we now enjoy today. As such, it's the best show on this list. The only problem is that fans have to wait until 2025 for the fifth and final Stranger Things season.
