Netflix is hoping to have the third Knives Out mystery available to subscribers as soon as possible.

In an interview with Variety about the streamer's upcoming film slate, Ori Marmur -- the vice president of Netflix’s original studio film division -- shared that "[Writer and director] Rian Johnson is already working on the third one, but there’s no set time table. We’d love to have it sooner rather than later given the response to the last one." Glass Onion, the second installment in Johnson's murder mystery series, debuted on Netflix in December 2022 to critical acclaim, quickly becoming the third-biggest movie ever on the streaming service.

While Knives Out 3 remains shrouded in mystery, both literally and figuratively, Johnson has assured fans that he will make sure that the Knives Out films refrain from getting complacent. "Daniel and I have talked a lot about that, how the instant we feel like we’re turning the crank on another one of these, we have to stop," he said. "So, it’s very important with each one now, and the third one especially, that it feels kind of scary and dangerous. You have to shake the box."

Another Benoit Blanc Mystery

One change fans are hoping to see in the third Knives Out film is the lack of Glass Onion's confusing subtitle -- A Knives Out Mystery. Most fans have been against the subtitle since it was first unveiled, with many suggesting that A Benoit Blanc Mystery would be a better fit for the franchise since Daniel Craig's gentleman sleuth serves as the connective tissue between the standalone installments. Johnson himself has admitted to hating the subtitle, saying in December 2022, "Honestly, I'm pissed off that we have A Knives Out Mystery in the title. You know? I want it to just be called Glass Onion. I get it, and I want everyone who liked the first movie to know this is next in the series, but also, the whole appeal to me is it's a new novel off the shelf every time. But there's a gravity of a thousand suns toward serialized storytelling."

Glass Onion follows Craig's master detective Benoit Blanc as he rather unexpectedly finds himself in the middle of another murder mystery that has taken place on a private Greek island during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020. Joining Craig in the Netflix sequel are Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
