Netflix has offered anime fans a first look at its upcoming acquired series Uncle From Another World.
The streaming service debuted 10 images from the anime series during its Netflix Geeked Week presentation. Uncle From Another World begins with Takafumi's uncle, who fell into a coma 17 years ago, suddenly awakening like "a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and while comatose, he was actually transported to another world as some heroic guardian!" The released images give viewers their first look at the anime designs for Takafumi, Uncle, and a female elf who was one of Uncle's companions in another world.
Uncle From Another World will follow Takafumi as he comes to grips with sharing a room with "an uncle who is literally magical" while catching "the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes... and the traumatic outcome of the '90s console war!" The pair will also decide to use Uncle's magical abilities to help cover their living expenses. The series is produced by AtelierPontdarc and directed by Shigeki Kawai, with Kenta Ihara writing the series' scripts, and Kazuhiro Ota designing the characters.
Hotondoshindeiru launched the manga series on Kadokawa Shoten's ComicWalker website in June 2018. As of this writing, seven volumes of Uncle From Another World have been released with over 1.5 million copies in circulation. The series is licensed in North America by Yen Press, which published the manga's first volume in June 2021. Volume 5 of Uncle From Another World will be published in North America on July 19.
Although the American voice cast for Uncle From Another World has not yet been announced, the Japanese cast features several familiar voice talents from the world of anime. Uncle is played by Takehito Koyasu, who also voiced JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure's Dio and Attack on Titan's Zeke. Takafumi will be voiced by Jun Fukuyama, whose past credits include Joker on Persona 5 and Lelouche on Code Geass. Haruka Tomatsu, who voices Haru on Persona 5 and Asuna on Sword Art Online, will portray Elf on the series. Other cast members include Mikako Komatsu (Jujutsu Kaisen) as Fujimiya, Aoi Yuki (Symphogear) as Mabel and Aki Toyosaki (Persona 5) as Alicia.
An exact release date for Uncle From Another World has not been revealed, but the series is expected to begin streaming on Netflix in July.
