January 5 is the U.S. premiere date for the eight-episode series, based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Charles S. Forsman (Revenger, Slasher). The series, adapted for British television and aired last October on UK's Channel 4, is based on Forsman's tale of James (played by Black Mirror‘s Alex Lawther), a self-proclaimed psychopath who joins the rebellious and foul-mouthed Alyssa (Penny Dreadful‘s Jessica Barden) in running away from their small town.

James plans to kill Alyssa on the road-trip but over the course of their adventures, he starts to feel conflicting emotions in the series' rather different coming-of-age story. Forsman ends up painting a black comedy that's steeped in romance and drama, as both youngsters end up encountering a vast and diverse array of characters on the road that keep pushing them towards each other, and beyond the boundaries of friendship.

Forsman is a three-time Ignatz Award-winner and worked on this story, as well as Celebrated Summer for Fantagraphics. Writer Charlie Covell (Humans) was in charge of penning this Netflix adaptation with Jonathan Entwistle and Lucy Tcherniak coming on board as directors.
