Following the success of Netflix's The Witcher, the streaming service announced the development of a prequel film in January. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is an upcoming anime film centered on the witcher known as Vesemir. Few details have been released about the project until now.To conclude the 6 Days of Witchmas event, Netflix unveiled the film's logo in an animated clip on social media. The logo features a wolf head, the symbol of the School of the Wolf, to which Geralt of Rivia and Vesemir both belong. The upcoming film was confirmed to hit screens in 2021.RELATED: The Witcher: Netflix Interviews Geralt's Most Loyal Friend

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will explore Vesemir's past, beginning with his youth and his introduction to the witcher profession. The official Netflix description reads: "Long before mentoring Geralt, Vesemir begins his own journey as a witcher after the mysterious Deglan claims him through the Law of Surprise." It is currently unknown who will play the old witcher in the anime film.

Actor Theo James played Vesemir in a brief, faceless appearance in Season 1 of The Witcher. Kim Bodnia will take on the role in Season 2, which adapts the events of Andrzej Sapkowski's Blood of Elves. The season, like the novel, will see Ciri train at Kaer Morhen with the aid of Geralt of Rivia, Lambert, Eskel, Coën and their mentor Vesemir.

It should be noted that while Vesemir does appear as an important supporting character in the novels, his backstory has never been explored, save for the fact that he had served as a fencing instructor and was one of the few who survived the attack on Kaer Morhen: an event that effectively destroyed the School of the Wolf by eliminating a large number of its witchers, as well as the knowledge of how to create more.

Netflix is producing Nightmare of the Wolf with the South Korean animation company, Studio Mir, who has previously worked on series such as The Legend of Korra, Voltron: Legendary Defenders, Young Justice: Outsiders and more.

Season 2 of The Witcher is currently filming in the United Kingdom and is scheduled to wrap in February 2021. No official release date has yet been announced. It has been speculated that Nightmare of the Wolf, the anime tie-in film, will be released before the premiere of Season 2.

The Witcher stars Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri and Joey Batey as Jaskier. Season 1 is now available on Netflix.
