The legendary red-clad thief Carmen Sandiego will soon make her animated return on Netflix. In advance of her new series, the streaming service has released the show's first trailer, which gives fans a glimpse at this new take on the popular character and teases her backstory.

As the trailer opens, a character asks Carmen (Gina Rodriguez) about how she became a criminal. "You want the whole story," Carmen responds. Viewers are then shown snippets of her past, with a young Carmen at V.I.L.E. Training Academy for Thieves. During scenes of Carmen's training, a voiceover from another character tells her that if she chooses the path of a professional thief, there's no turning back.

As the trailer continues, viewers learn of the incident that changed Carmen's views on stealing, with Carmen explaining that stealing harms people, especially if one is willing to steal lives. Following this, the trailer then shows Carmen in action. The thief vows to secure any object V.I.L.E. might exploit by doing what she does best.

Viewers can also catch a glimpse of Player (Finn Wolfhard) and hear the series' famous question: "Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego?"

In the original Carmen Sandiego games and the Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego? animated series, Carmen originally worked for the ACME Detective Agency, but defected to crime, and formed V.I.L.E. The trailer for the new series, however, eschews that backstory in favor of giving Carmen a more sympathetic one, portraying her as an anti-hero from the start.

Starring Gina Rodriguez and Finn Wolfhard, Carmen Sandiego will premiere on Netflix on January 18.
