The Midnight Club fans, brace yourselves for disappointment: Netflix just canceled the young adult horror series after only one season.

Netflix pulled the plug on The Midnight Club after two of its executive producers, Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy, announced they were heading to rival streaming service Amazon Studios, reports Deadline. Flanagan co-created the show with Leah Fong, drawing inspiration from Christopher Pike's 1994 novel of the same name. He also directed its first two episodes. Flanagan still has one more project in the works for Netflix, a miniseries adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher, which seemingly remains unaffected by his movie to Amazon Studios.

News that Flanagan and Macy were jumping ship for Amazon Studios first broke in December 2022. The pair released a joint statement confirming that their production company, Intrepid Pictures, would be developing projects exclusively for distribution on Prime Video after their existing deal with Netflix wrapped up. That deal will apparently end with the release of The Fall of the House of Usher, the fifth production Flanagan has spearheaded for the streaming giant. Flanagan's other Netflix shows include The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.

The Intrepid Pictures/Amazon Studios deal reportedly covers streaming series only, with Flanagan and Macy free to develop feature films with other parties. Flanagan's next film is The Season of Passage, after which it's unclear what he will work on next. The filmmaker has previously expressed interest in overseeing a new adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower, calling it his dream project. Flanagan even outlined his approach to translating the epic multi-volume series to the screen, including a detailed description of how his hypothetical adaptation would begin.

There's currently no indication that Flanagan is attached to a Dark Tower reboot, although he does have form where Stephen King-inspired movies are concerned. Flanagan wrote and directed 2019's Doctor Sleep, which is based on King's novel of the same name, itself a sequel to The Shining. He recently spoke about the pivotal role the movie played in convincing him to finally address his alcoholism, after writing a scene between Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) and the ghost of his father Jack (Henry Thomas). "The biggest gift I got out of [making Doctor Sleep]... was sobriety," Flanagan recalled.

The Midnight Club Season 1 is currently streaming on Netflix.
